Are you sticking the same 5V PS/2 board into it each time?  If so, consider one of the better choices, any of the later DCS boards.

ERR will end up costing more to get full featured running, you have to add smoke control and a chuff switch in addition to the ERR Cruise Commander and the ERR RailSounds Commander.  I add the extra features using my Chuff-Generator and Super-Chuffer II, but as you can see, that does run up the cost.

While it can be installed in an MTH engine it presents many more challenges than installing it in Lionel or other TMCC engine. Pretty much everything except the motor and smoke unit has to be removed including the couplers. The smoke unit needs to be modified to work. The biggest change is creating an antenna. It will easier if you put everything in the tender as making an antenna in the engine would be difficult.

You can see whats involved by going to electricrr.com and downloading the manuals for the Cruise Commander and Railsounds board.

Something is going wrong for the board to keep blowing up. It's either a locomotive problem or a layout problem (i.e. poor circuit protection like a Postwar ZW with no external modern breakers). Fix that problem and the board will stop failing.

+2 ….spend all that money on an ERR upgrade, and as Lou and George mentioned, if you have an underlying problem, poof goes the X-pensive ERR products …..self inflicted vaporization is not covered under anybody’s warranty,….
