There is a posting in the for sale section offing the Lionel NYC 20th Century Heavyweight Passenger set 6-25713.
In the posting the member notes that zink rot is on these cars and that it is a pervasive problem with these sets. I have the six car set including the station sounds diner and none of my cars have this problem.
So, is it pervasive in these cars as noted in the posting?

The set in question is from the 2014 run. Is yours from the same year? The SS diner was only made around 2007.

My set was produced in July 2012. The SS diner was not part of that set but it was produced around 2007.

You have the 6-15541 NYC diner? How well does it match your set?
In the 2012 volume 1 catalog the 6-25721 diner has sound, in the 2012 volume 2 catalog the 6-25790 diner has no sound.
I have cars from both runs. The 2014 set is showing signs of zinc rot. The cars from 2007 are okay the last time I checked.
This is news to me, since I have this set and have not noticed any rotting, but I'll have to double check.
I think the only sign I saw was a broken knuckle on the combo car's front coupler.

It matches perfectly. The only difference is the trucks have chains on them.
I have the six car set including the shipping cartons. The date on the label on the cartons is 7/9/12. So, my set was produced in 2012 not 2014.
There must have been another run in 2014 and those are the sets that have the problem. Can anyone who has the sets including the shipping cartons confirm the dates.
It is very confusing.

Maybe they didn't sell well, with left over stock re-cataloged in 2014? As you say, the "2014" set may have different run dates. Will be interesting to see, especially since Zinc pest parts seen to be irreplaceable.

So, what you are saying is they produced them in 2012 they did not sell they kept them then re-labeled them for 2014. Lionel puts the build date on the freight and passenger cars they produce. So, those who have the ones with the issues what is the build date.
The exact dates are immaterial. Just know that Lionel made one set prior to 2010 and one set after 2010. The second set was cataloged with a SS Diner but the diner was not released with the 6 cars. It was during a period when Lionel stopped doing SS Diners for a few years. I didn't think Lionel ever did a second SS diner for this set but haven't been looking for more of these cars. So who knows. Its the cars made after 2010 that may have the zinc rot issue.
