You're not doing what you should be doing. Follow these instructions from pages 37-38 of The DCS Companion 3rd Edition to record and play back a Custom Sound:
CUSTOM SOUNDS
• Scroll and press the thumbwheel to select an entry. The message "Building Sound List" is briefly displayed
• Record Sound allows recording a new Custom Sound
• Use the thumbwheel to scroll to the TIU in which the new Custom Sound is to be saved and press the thumbwheel to select it. If there is only one TIU on the layout, the list of TIUs is not displayed, and no selection need be made
• Select a sound source by scrolling through the list of possible sound sources and pressing the thumbwheel
• The available time remaining for Custom Sounds is displayed. A maximum of 174 seconds of Custom Sounds may be recorded for each TIU
• Press Soft Key S1 (REC) to begin recording the sound. Note that the sound may turn off after about 11 seconds, however, the Custom Sound will continue to be recorded
• Press Soft Key S2 (STP) when finished recording the sound to stop the recording process
• Press Soft Key S3 (SAV) to save the recorded sound
• Use the on-screen keyboard to name the sound. Scroll the thumbwheel to each character in the name and press the thumbwheel to add the character. Scroll to D on the bottom row, right end of the keyboard to save the sound in the TIU
• Pressing S3 (SAV) is the equivalent of pressing S2 followed by S3
Play Sound allows playback of a previously recorded sound. Press the thumbwheel to select
• Scroll to a Custom Sound and press the thumbwheel to select it. The sound will play back through the active DCS engine
