Hi there...I’m new to this forum and just getting into the hobby and I got a question about these 2 units I inherited from my late uncle years ago. It’s been in a box for years and it’s my first time trying to check it out. So basically, I only have the B and C units. I placed them on the tracks and lights turned on and headlight blinked but wouldn’t move forward. I was told by the local hobby shop that I need the A unit to make this set works. So, my question is, is there a chance I can make these units run without the A unit? It seems that it is very difficult to look for just the A unit online and using these units as a “very heavy” paperweight 😀 would be a waste, considering that they are like brand new (?). Any help would be much appreciated.

Happy Labor Day weekend and Happy RAILROADING!

CPB, Find out what era they are, whether Proto 1, 2 or 3.

The tether and operating systems are not interchangeable, finding a GN A unit might not be easy, but another road name is an option in that series. Swapmeets are great places to check, as are Ebay, Trainz Auctions and the For Sale or Trade section on here. What you have are not powered and need the power A unit to move. They will run behind a Lionel or Williams engine though, and those are much more available than an MTH one. You would probably not get the sounds unless had them worked on.

As Ron indicated, you have a bit of a problem. The A unit you're missing is the one with the motors in it, so the units you have are not much good except as display pieces. It's unlikely you'll find the missing A unit without buying another set, although you may very possibly be able to buy the A-A set without the B unit. That still leaves you with an extra unpowered A, of course. You also might do a further search of your uncle's trains - that missing A unit went somewhere.

I see gears on those trucks so it may be a powered unit, I also see a 4 pin connector which is usually PS-1, but could be PS-2 if un powered.  Really need model number to help more.

If this is PS-1 set and that is the powered Trail A, it could be modified to operate with the installed DCRU.  Jumpers need to me added to the board to allow the unit to work as a basic reverse unit.  Otherwise you need a similar model Lead A.  Or upgrade it if it has motors.  G
