Just got this baby off of ebay. Did not realize it was scale. It is a beauty, however, just don't know
where I'm going to run it. What is the minimum radius to run it? I have O42 now. Do I need
O54 or O76?

With the small pilot truck it will go around standard 031 curves.
Hope you like yours as much as I like mine. The sound on this one--especially the whistle--is amazing!!
Thanks for the replies, gentlemen. Now that I'm hooked, what would be a nice set of cars to run behind it?
PS - BlueComet400 - How did your engine come packed? Was it just plastic bags or were there the ribbons also? The reason I ask - seller stated NIB. Looks like there may have been some running, but I do see a sticker stating that it was tested(by Lionel?) Know he took it out of the box for pics. BTW - you are correct about the whistle - Wow!
Appears to have been prior to packing with ribbons. Just the plastic bag with the inspection sticker on mine too. Not like they scrimped on packaging though...engine and tender within separate bags, in separate styrofoam cradles, in separate boxes, in separate bags again, in the main set box, in the factory seal.
I believe the CV had come and gone prior to streamlined cars. I haul a mix of MTH and K-Line 18" heavyweights behind mine

Swanko,
The mini catalog in which the Commodore Vanderbilt was introduced in 1996 showed it pulling a separate sale 4-car set of “all-new” dark green Pullman scale-length heavyweight passenger cars. There were two coaches, a full baggage and an observation car. The set of cars was Catalog #6-19060.
But they did not identify the minimum diameter curve for either the engine or the passenger cars.
HTH,
Bill
When my layout is done, I plan on running my CV with a string of K-Line NYC heavyweights.
Mine is packed away and I don't recall if it had ribbons or not. When I get a chance to dig it out from under the benchwork I'll have a look.
Gotta love the whistle on this loco!!! I have no idea if it's prototypical, but I don't care.
I believe Lionel had yet to use ribbons in their packaging until 1998.
Regardless of its...controversial color, it's still one of my favorite Hudsons and designs from the USA era of Lionel. I personally purchased the most recent 20th Century Limited cars from Lionel's 2011 catalog to go with my Vision Hudson, and it makes a nice match for the Vanderbilt, too. I plan on getting a StationSounds Diner to complete it.
Though I personally have never run any of the scale Hudsons on anything less than O-42, and those heavyweights need at least O-54 to negotiate.
Yup. 0-54.

I have the cars 6-19060 & 2 add on cars ,I am out of town do no know the numbers, actually I have 2 sets, one set is pulled with the VL Hudson.
if interested , my email is in my profile. Condition is great, very little runtime, taken out of the box to make sure the lights worked. Not brand new.
