Have not posted for a while so here goes.

I am buying some K-line tank cars to include in a consist and want to repaint them all flat black and apply decals.  Do any of you have suggestions or warnings about:

  1. disassembling for painting
  2. what spray paints are OK
  3. should I sand off the existing decals or painted information before painting

Thanks.

If you don't have an airbrush I would use Testors spray paints. They are specifically formulated for plastics. You need to use a gloss paint or the decals will "silver". You can apply a flat clear after the decals have dried and the decal residue has been cleaned off to give your car a dull finish if that is what you prefer. I would sand the decals off or strip the paint before the repaint or you will see the outline of the letters after the car is repainted. 400 grit is good for removing the lettering and graphics and 800 grit is good for smoothing out the areas where the lettering has been removed and for prepping the rest of the car for painting. I have repainted a K-line tank car among several other things and I think that the frame comes off when you remove the truck mount screws, though I could be mistaken. There is more to a repaint, but this should be enough to finish the project.

It really depends on the tankcar. If it was previously painted and painted at Sanda Kan (China) any kind of paint may or may not react to their paint. I've seen it happen, but I couldn't tell which paint will and which will not. You may have to strip it.

And, if it's the O gauge tank car, there is a screw in the center of the chassis that holds it to the car.
