Hello all

I hope I am posting this in the right section. I’ve recently inherited an MTH set that I have not been able to locate much info on. It is an MTH 20-3416. It’s a Union Pacific big boy set. The engine number is #4013.

I’ve been able to locate listings and closed sales online of the engine, but only engine numbers 4014, 4009, 4012 etc. I have not been able to locate any previous sales of this set with the 4013 engine.

I am curious if anyone has any knowledge surrounding this specific set/engine number. Has it been discontinued? Is it a rare find?

thanks in advance

Did you visit the MTH website, and use the Product Locator? I found that to be a "Specialty passenger set".

Yes I did. But that’s all I’ve found. I am trying to get some more info on it. I haven’t been able to find anything for this specific set on eBay or anywhere else.

I want to know what it is if I decide to sell it. Seems to be a rare set maybe. Not sure

The MTH 20-3416 is a Union Pacific Big Boy set featuring the iconic 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive. Let’s dive into some details about this impressive locomotive:

  1. Locomotive Model: The MTH 20-3416-1E Union Pacific Big Boy is a Premier model. It’s a highly detailed and well-crafted replica of the Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy steam locomotive. The “1E” in the model number indicates that it comes with Proto-Sound 2.0 (PS2), which provides realistic sound effects and control features1.

  2. Union Pacific Big Boy: The Union Pacific Big Boy locomotives are legendary in the world of trains. They were massive articulated steam locomotives built specifically for Union Pacific Railroad. The Big Boy series was designed to handle heavy freight trains over steep mountain grades. The locomotives were known for their impressive power and size, with a wheel arrangement of 4-8-8-4 (four leading wheels, eight driving wheels, eight more driving wheels, and four trailing wheels). The Union Pacific operated a total of 25 Big Boys, and they remain iconic symbols of American railroading history.

  3. Engine Number 4013: The specific locomotive in your set has the engine number 4013. Each Big Boy locomotive had a unique number, and 4013 was one of them. While engine numbers 4012 and 4014 are more commonly seen, 4013 is less frequently encountered. This rarity could contribute to its appeal among collectors and enthusiasts.

  4. Collectibility and Rarity: The MTH Premier Union Pacific Big Boy Passenger set with engine number 4013 is sought after by train enthusiasts. Its rarity and historical significance make it a valuable addition to any collection. If you’re looking to understand its current market value, I recommend checking specialized train forums, auction sites, or contacting train collectors and experts.

  5. Photos: You mentioned that you have photos attached. If you’d like, you can share those photos, and I can provide further insights based on the visual details.

In summary, the MTH 20-3416-1E Union Pacific Big Boy set with engine number 4013 is a remarkable model that captures the essence of a true American railroad legend. Enjoy your exploration of this fascinating piece of railroading history! 🚂🌟123
