I was looking at the recent pictures and videos of the blowdown smoke on the big boy. I don't own one. I want one, can't afford one. My question is this, is there any concern that some of the electronics on those switches that are under the plate for the blow down smoke will get coated in residue from the smoke that is constantly trapped by the lid? Seems like eventually things up there would get an oily coating and maybe impact funtionality of those switches. Just curious. Not badmouthing in any way.

The lid has a plug on it to cap the smoke unit. When installed, the cap will seal the smoke unit fill hole so that the smoke is forced to the blow down outlets. I imagine a small amount may get past the cap but for the most part it's a pretty snug fit.
See a blow up I made from Alex's pic...

That's a good picture. I was not aware of the peice the covered the hole. I thought it was just metal plate that covered everything and trapped the smoke with the switches. Looks like this not be an issue in the future.
Smoke fluid does not conduct electric current so there's no concern that it will cause shorting out simply by spillage/collecting on the switches but I suppose that it might interfere with a wire connection that is not good in the first place.
It's interesting to see in Alex M's photos of the inside of the BB posted on another thread that there is what appears to be some fluid overspill on the part that is used to fill the blowdown smoke unit. In my experience you have to expect some leakage of this kind however well built the connection is.
I think the real worry, judging by Mike Reagan's comments in the Lionel BB video, is that overfilling these smoke units will affect the fan motors. I've done that to my VL GE EVO, which for years was the only completely trouble-free VL engine I had.
I would imagine any electronically controlled engine with a smoke unit has the same chance of overflow/residue getting on the electronics at some point. I have had a mishap or two with smoke fluid with no damage done so far. Scary, yes, but everything is still working.
