My new 30-20181-1 MTH R17 set, pictured and described as "Red Birds" in the catalog, were delivered today in a color called Maroon on the box and, depending on how the light hits them, looking more like Black Cherry or maybe even Chocolate Brown to me. Either way, they're definitely not red. According to MTH, this is the original "as delivered" color scheme for these cars, but I'm not savvy enough to know. Given that they are not what was cataloged or expected, I'm disappointed.

Anyone out there know enough about these cars to confirm or deny the truthiness of the color?

The original as delivered r-17 was maroon. If you go to NY Subway Resources look under cars and you should find a photo with the correct color. The lower portion of the as delivered r-15 was the same color. I have not seen the new MTH r-17's yet so I cannot comment on the shade of maroon they used. It was a dark shade of maroon.

The interior was blue doors and dove grey panels with red venal cushioned seats. Very good looking car  I might add. Enjoy the set!

MTH catalog say MAROON.

R-17’s as delivered were maroon. I never noticed this color as a kid because non-washed maroon cars always looked black.

Not a color choice I would have marketed as most people never noticed them.

Also the color had a short life span, repainted by other schemes which most are  familiar with.

MTH catalogs are generally incorrect. They just re-ran the red photo R17’s marketed years ago because they don’t have a sample maroon set yet.

Anyone interested in subways should purchase and study a few great books that are available.

  1. Now that's the R-17's I remember The color is perfect. I can remember waiting for my first ride on the Brand new R-7's. My friends  and I wait at 125th street station. We let many trains of HI V's and Steinways go by until a train of R-17's pulled in. WOW!!!!, The were  a sight to see. Gleaming in their Maroon exterior color and the spanking new interior. The conductor announcing station stops in his Irish broge. The acceleration and braking were a marvel to experience for a 13 year old Bronx boy.  Wooosh!
  2. The MTH maroon car is the way it was. They got it right

Greg, I had the same problem with the brand new R-36 PS3 set. I made sure the track was clean, and lubed the unit as you did.  My track is also flat and the powered unit would not even pull 2 cars.  I had to send the powered unit in for repair.   The MTH repair form said they fixed the motor and electric board.  I know can pull 4 cars wth no problem.

I'll call MTH today and get a RA#

I too pre-ordered MTH's RED R-17 subway set and was surprised to see them arrive in the MAROON color. Admittedly they do look great and run very well indeed, but like Os3R, I too was expecting RED. I wrote to MTH on their facebook page to inquiry as to what happened to the red version of the R-17s and their response was that "...customers, a lot of customers requested maroon..."  I was not made aware of the change until I received my set.

ferroeqinologist,

I ordered my Maroon R-17's as well.A friend ordered them for me as part of his order.

I have a set of R-17's in red in the box never opened. in my modeling era the red ones and the silver and blue ones are too new. If you are unhappy I would be willing to trade the red ones for the maroon. I could live with 2 sets. Let me know.

Nate
