Recently New York City Transit announced that they have signed a contract for 300 R179 subway cars to replace the R32 & R40

subway cars. The new cars are to start being delivered by the year 2015. The R32 & R40 cars are the last cars that one can stand by the front and rear end doors and get a motorman's view of the right-of-way. The remaining R32's when retired will be

operating over 51 years since entering service starting in September, 1964 to July, 1965. I was aboard the first revenue run of

the R32's one morning in September, 1964. When the train pulled into the 57th St. Station there was a red carpet on the platform and a band playing music. We were handed postcards with a picture of a train of these R32's Cars in the New York Central's Mott

Haven Yard taken the month before. I lived in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY at that time.

R42 Ed

The R40Ms were retired in late 2008, while the R40 Slants were retired on June 12, 2009. Many R42s have been retired already, however, this order, yes, will replace the last 48 cars on TA Property.

Hi Ben:

The post card that was given out that morning in September, 1964 on the W57th. St.

platform of the BMT was in color. It was taken looking down at the yard and no other

trains were in the photo. The banner that is on the front of the R32 car was the same

as shown in your photo.

In the body of my posting on May 5th I meant to type R32's and R42's. Last Fall I rode

a train of R42's on the A line from 42nd and 8th to 125th St.

Just read a few days ago that 222 of the R-32 Cars are going though an overhaul again and will be around for up to another 5 years when all of the R-179 are planned to be in service. These cars have always been my favorite model of all of the post world war 2 cars and I rode the first set in revenue service in September, 1964 from Sheepshead Bay Station to the W. 57th St. Station on a beautiful morning then.
