On Thursday, some friends and I went up to Palmer, MA to do some
fanning and to celebrate my birthday. Palmer is a great place to
visit: Trains of 4 railroads pass there (CSX Boston Line, Amtrak,
New England Central and Massachusetts Central). NECR and CSX cross
on a diamond at Union Station). Since Penn-Central, Union Station
was unused for railroad purposes, but about a decade ago, was purchased
by an entrepeneur who opened a great restaurant named the Steaming Tender,
with a railroading theme, featuring the 7 railroads that have served Palmer,
and the gradual restoration of the building to its former splendor. Here
are photos of two scenes, both now, and the architect's rendering of the
completed restoration:
And if you're ever in the Springfield-Worcester-Hartford area, plan on a visit to Palmer Union Station and the Steaming Tender Restaurant. In nice weather, sit on the patio and have trains rolling past you while enjoying your meal.
