Does anyone know what triggers the chuff sound on the old gold plated scale Hudson? I am considering upgrading my 18005 hudson to a better sound setup, but want to use the hall affect sensor to trigger the sound on the upgrade. Any ideas or suggestions?

I have one that I run for a few minutes every year. I believe it is a cherry switch just like everything else from that era.

Didn't you answer your own question? It's the Hall Effect sensor on the tender wheel. You might be able to use it on a modern sound board, something I haven't tried.

You can use a hall effect switch with ERR to trigger the sound.

Bob,
The Lionel set only included the Hudson engine and matching woodside caboose.
The passenger car is one of 7 from the MTH Millenium Premier set they made a little bit earlier that same year.

The chuff on the 6-28062 Lionel Gold Hudson is generated by a cherry switch in the locomotive that gets activated with the smoke cam. This signal is transmitted to the tender on the serial line via the infrared tether.
It IS possible to use a hall-effector sensor with a RailSounds 4 sound system, but you'll need to be certain that you find the right mother board that has the connections to the right pins on the sound boards. I don't think the motherboard found in the gold Hudson tender is set up for it.

The 18006 from the same era used a hall effect sensor on the tender, I guess they couldn't make up their mind back then.
Thomas is correct. Lionel only made an engine and caboose. I purchased the rest on Ebay and they are MTH.
