I have a "K-Line by Lionel" 6-22271 Milwaukee Road EP-5 with TMCC & RailSounds.

I'm upgrading it with an Electric RR Cruise Commander M, and was wondering about possible sound upgrades while I have it apart. Lionel describes the sound card for this engine as "RAILSOUNDS 4.0 / GENERIC ELECTRIC". What would the sound differences between it and the _new_ ERR RailSounds Commander EP-5/GG-1 RailSounds series be - are they both 4.0, or is the new ERR board an improvement?

The other possible option, which might be a direct plug-in replacement, would be a sound card from the 6-31753 Great Northern Diesel Freight (TMCC EP-5 Electric), described as "RAILSOUNDS 5.0 / GN EP-5 #375". The sound electronics on this engine seem the same as the 6-22271 (a RailSounds Power Board / Universal), so this might be an easy board swap. I don't know what sound differences there would be between a generic EP-5 board and the custom GN #375. I also don't know the significance of "Must contact Lionel to order" - are they made of unobtainium?

Anyone have any knowledge of this?

Thanks

Replacing an RS4 board with RS5 or the new ERR Railsounds board will give you intelligable crew talk. The horn may be different though maybe not significantly better. Not sure, given this is an electric, the motor sounds will be significantly better. If this were a steam or diesel engine the improvement would be more obvious.

Replacing the k-line speaker with a full size fatboy will likely yield the best improvement.

They are toys but they come with the following write up in the owners manual.

RailSoundsTM -digital samples from a real EP-5

Lionel RailSounds is the most realistic

model railroad sound system in the world.

Your EP-5 features digital samples from an

authentic EP-5 for the ultimate in realism.

Does this only apply to the original Lionel Post War celebration series units?  Does the K-Line by Lionel have a "generic" sound set with the wrong sounds?

Yeah, I saw a video.

The K-Line units were originally offered with something called K-Sounds as well as RS and horn/bell only.  I think that the K-Sounds may have the air chime.  I saw an K-Line unit running at a show and the horn wasn't the Leslie.

I have one of those boards but there are no diagrams available for hooking one of these up. It's ok if you needed to do a swap but not very useful otherwise.  These were released right around the time of the original license agreement with Lionel for TMCC/RS.  These boards were supposed to have more than horn/whistle but I've never seen any documentation on how you were supposed to trigger the sounds.

Lionel does not sell Railsound 5.0 boards. They will only sell you one if you send a defective one back and will only replace it with the same.
