I just unpacked the Beef set I ordered from the recent RMT sale. I had sort of wanted one for a while, but thought the price was way high for a niche item unrelated to anything else I collect or operate. The  warehouse clearance sale brought the price down to where I couldn't resist. I paid about $350 for the B&O AA set, powered B unit, and all four passenger cars.

The paint job and overall quality look very good. I was impressed by the cars being full of passengers, a nice touch. Didn't Walthers make a similar sort of mini-passenger car in a kit back in the 60's? I seem to remember seeing such a thing, but I can't be sure. Does anybody have one, or an old catalog showing them?

I was amused that the road numbers on my B&O set are 663, 664, 665, and 667 - carefully avoiding 666. New item for "to do" list: renumber one car as 666. Maybe add a name - "The Beast." Maybe put Godzilla on the drumhead.

A couple of suggestions for Walter. The three-unit diesel is longer than the train. A third set of cars might be a good marketing move, either a pair of coaches or, better yet, a coach and a diner. The diner would be kind of neat, you could have passengers sitting at a table. The B&O set should include car #666. In the longer run, perhaps a line of shorty freight cars on a common four-wheel chassis. They would look appropriate with the Beep and Beef four-wheel locomotives.

By the way, I appreciate Walter's engaging in the discussions on this board. I think he is enhancing RMT's image by mixing it up with both friends and critics here.

Southwest Hiawatha...Appreciate your comments about the PEEP passenger cars. Yes they were inspired by a similar version I had years ago in HO. However, at that time there were only 2 cars offered...Coach/"Oscar" and Observation/"Piker". RMT expanded to include a Baggage car and since the PEEPs are really shorter Madison type cars...I could only suggest the Baggage car be a "Felix" to match the 'Odd Couple" cars "Oscar" and "Piker".

You are very good to notice there was no B&O Coach #666...obvious reasons there to skip a number!

If you really need more B&O passenger cars for your BEEFs, the new Streamline Passenger cars will be available late Summer in B&O.

Found a copy of the original Walther's ad for the 'Oscar" and "Piker" cars...

My War Bonnet BEEF's are VERY nicely painted and detailed. The wire screens and moving fans are great.

On a side note.....how I miss them Walthers catalogs and kits from the 60's and even 70's. When I was dating my now wife her dad was always building a Walthers kit of some kind at the kitchen table when I came by. At the time I was in HO and did not understand why he built these huge O cars when I could pick up a Athrean coach for $3 and have it done in minutes.......now I know why.....

I got the Pennsy ABA a few weeks ago and used them to pull an 8 car consists of the 027 PRR Fleet of Modernization coaches. Looked good and performed well for many hours at a show.

Thats good to hear. I keep eyeing the NYC BEEFs but would prefer to have theanew streamlined coaches. I'll have to settle on the NYC though as I'd really love to have a BEEF in McGuiness colors.

I think that was called the Beer Can Tanker, or some such. I have one stashed away somewhere - one of these days I'll pick up an old steel beer can and build it. Walthers made some neat stuff, back in the day.

YEP!...my father in law built a number of them. I have the remains of two of them...enough to rebuild one car I think. Sure miss those Walthers O catalogs....

If you detail the interior of a sleeper, it would only have one bunk on each side

I picked up a set of 4 RMT cars off of a seller on ebay for $160 shipped (they took Paypal).  Now we need a RPO, Dinner(maybe a kitchen car and eating car set), and a Sleeper in these short heavyweight cars

They are not a good match IMHO. Think of the Lionel Texas Special set from the 1950s. The Beef is 2 1/2" wide vs. the 027 cars 2 1/8" and the cars are 1/2" shorter (height) than the engine. The engine is close to scale size except for length. A better match would be the 15" aluminum cars. If you get the powered B unit you would not have any problem pulling 6 or so 15" cars.

I agree.  I have a Warbonnet A-B-B-A set and they look good with a set of 15" alum Lionel superChief set cars from the 1992 era they offered then.  The almost look like they belong with them, but frankly the Lionel A-B-A near-scale Warbonnets that came with them looks a tad better, just due to size.

My "problem" with BEEFS is that they are very hard to match when putting together a train: they are too scale to be toys and too "toy" to fully fit in with scale stuff.  For some reason, BEEPS seem to get away with it either way, but not these puppies.  I still like them a lot.
