I consider the first two "must haves".
1) Track Planning for Realistic Operation by John Armstrong (Kalmbach Publishing Co.).
2) Trackwork Handbook for Model Railroads by Paul Mallery (Carstens Publications, Inc.).
I consider the next two very helpful.
3) Creative Layout Design by John Armstrong (Kalmbach Publishing Co.).
4) Realistic Model Railroad Operation by Tony Koester (Kalmbach Publishing Co.).
Others may have their favorites to add to this list.
