Removing a Lionel ALCO C-420 Motor

If these are anything like the Dash 9 from that same era, you'll need to remove the bottom plate exposing the axles and gears - There's a Magic screw under there that is preventing you from separating the motor.

Be sure to put the flat spot of the axle bearings in the correct location when re-assembling.

Funny , you should mention about the axle bearings. I did a legacy Atlantic repair. The bearing differences between adjacent sides were small. I didn't even know there was a difference until running.

There were several truck designs around that time, without actually seeing that particular one, it's hard to say.

The axle bearings are a PITA, why they didn't do square inserts escapes me, they're much easier to get lined up and back together.

This is what the motor and swivel plate looks like. Unless there's a screw to remove with an Allen wrench that I missed, it looks like they were put on those plates with super glue.

Lift the motor away from the frame and look up at the metal plate from below. There should be two screws holding the motor to that small metal plate.

Thanks. That turned out to be the solution. How I didn't see those things is beyond me. Or my eyesight must be going faster than most...
