Hi,

Does anyone know of a good method to strip paint from rolling stock made of of multiple materials, such as Lionel freight car where they use a combination of die cast metal, etched brass, and plastic in the construction of the car?  I tried stripping a car by submerging it in Scalecoat Painter Remover and it worked fine on the plastic components but it didn't really do much for the die cast metal or the etched brass components.

Thanks!

Scott

sure is a hot topic!

for example, Weaver models strip fairly easily because they are painted in the US.

most china made models use a tenacious paint that is more like ink and is tough to remove completely.

I've used Castrol super clean on Weaver models and tried just about everything that doesn't melt plastic on China models, with varying degrees of success.

I like bob2's method though.

Thanks everyone for your responses.  What about using a Badger 260 Grit blast device but instead use baking soda as the blasting medium (see link below) instead of the aluminum oxide that it comes with?  I’m thinking this is going to require a multiple step process.  I’m thinking the grit blaster might do okay on the exposed metal surfaces but I’m thinking it’s all the nooks and crannies in the metal that are going to require something like brake fluid, that is if brake fluid will lift the paint from these metal surfaces.  That is a test I will have to do.
