How do you remove roof hatch from Lionel legacy SD40-2. Just purchased one and need to access inside to add 9 volt battery and lower volume. My fingernails are old and brittle like me and I hate to unscrew the frame to get to the hatch from inside. Any help would be appreciated.

If you remove the carbody vent (it just lifts out) from behind the dynamic brake fan, then lift up on the rear set of fans, the battery compartment is underneath at the rear of the locomotive.
Not to be a wise guy but if you have the owners manual, Page 9 shows how easy it is to take off and replace the battery.
I have several Legacy SD40-2's and the rear hatch comes off very easily. In fact, I need to be careful when I lift them that I do not just pull the cover off and drop the locomotive.

Thanks Boilermaker1 - I would never thouht of that. By the way Charles Ro is offering some very good prices on Lionel locos. Got the SD40-2 for 317 and a PRR K4 for 417. Don't think we ever see so low prices again.
