Removing Side Rods Lionel PE Berkshire Junior

I use the Wiha Nut Drivers for the task.

Sharp needle nose pliers work, but nut drivers would  be best.

Trainmans2 also asked the size of the metric nut fastening the siderods on the particular engine he mentioned. Anyone know the exact metric size nutdriver he needs so he won't have to buy an entire set of metric nut drivers?

After a family friend brought me their Polar Express Berkshire with side rod problems a couple of times, I went for a set of the Wiha metric nut drivers. I purchased a set that came with a canvas roll pouch for storage. They are on sale right now: Wiha Metric nut driver set.

Just say "no" to needle nose pliers for metric (or any other size) side rod nuts.

Thanks for the replies.  Gunrunnerjohn's set starts at 1.5mm and ends at 4mm.  Charlie's set starts at 2.5mm and maxes out at 6.5mm.  A friend of mine suggested that the screws on the main rods are 5mm.    I would like a set that works on all of the hex screws on the PE Berkshire Jr.  This is the Lionchief version.

If you own a small set of metric 1/4" sockets you can use them and also determine the different sizes.  G

I measured one of the heads with a vernier caliper.  5mm.  I ordered the set recommended by Charlie.

I got a reply from Dean at Lionel.  5mm for the large fasteners and 3.5mm for the small fasteners.
