A few years ago I got quite a deal on a Sunset Models 44 tonner. I put it on the track, added power, it grumbled, gears made a terrible noise as it moved about 4 feet before stopping. Drive chain broke. I put it on a shelf and figured I’d get to it one day.
Here are some before pictures. The beat up cab and railing and missing windows.
The missing step...
The broken drive chain and about-to-disintegrate drive coupling (between motor and gear box).
Decided to take it all apart and clean and re-grease. Here are the gears before...
And after...
I had picked up a replacement drive chain, but it turned out that the old one just needed to be snapped back together. Runs smoothly now in both directions with hardly a sound.
I’m contemplating whether or not to return the weights to their original position. 44 tons scaled to 1/48 is a little under a pound (0.8 pounds if you believe in scaling weight). This model without the added weights is already 1.7 pounds, and the weights add another 1.6 pounds. I’ve had another one of these models that pulled close to 20 smaller Atlas boxcars when fully weighted, but I think in practice I’ll only be pulling a few boxcars.
Next step is to find some replacement screws. Many of the screw heads are stripped and I feel like I might as well replace now that I have it taken apart. Plus some parts appear to be missing numerous screws (eg the body and chassis only attached with 2 screws). I know there are a number of online sources, but I have no idea what to order. Looks like maybe 5/16 and 7/16.
Or maybe 4mm and 6mm?
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Lastly, a couple of the journals are badly worn inside (didn’t get a shot from the inside before re-assembly). They are held in place by two really tiny screws, and move freely up and down against a spring. Would love to find a source for these (if one exists).
This is the best replacement I’ve found so far for the tubing acting as the tubing between motor and gear box. Found 3/32 ID tubing at Lowe’s (orange tubing), and it seemed to fit at first, but soon started slipping. Then I found some slightly smaller, 5/64 ID tubing used for gas line in an RC car I believe. Good snug fit.
Here’s the chain I found at Micro Mark, perfect match for when it’s needed.
Next step, install a decoder and speaker, which I already have in hand. Just trying to pick up a few loose screws so I can reassemble properly.
