Hi Everyone,

I'm looking to add a Lionel PE trolley to the Xmas layout and thought it would be neat to run it on superstreets instead of standard track.  When I checked this out at the store, it appears that the D21 turns are too narrow for the trolley to make it through without bogging down.  Lee had mentioned in his superstreets guide that some trolleys can be modified by removing the limit screws in order to navigate the narrower turns.  Has anyone done this mod on this particular model of trolley and if so did it work well afterwards?  Is is something that you can undo at a later time if you wanted to go back to just using it on regular track again?

Thanks for the advice!

John

If you are talking about this PE trolley (below), it cannot be modified as I spoke about because it does not have swiveling trucks.  These two-axle trolleys have fixed axles that do not swivel.  My experience is that they negotiate D-21 curves well enough, slowly noticeably but acceptable, but tend to really slow on D-16 curves.

Thanks for the quick reply Lee!  That's the model I was looking at and I hadn't even considered whether it actually had swiveling trucks or not.  From a longevity standpoint have you noticed (or do you have any opinion as to) whether one of these slowing down through the tighter curves contributes to additional wear and tear on the motor?  I'd hate to burn the trolley out just to run it on superstreets instead of regular track.

Probably won't answer your question, but I've been running a Lionel Fort Collins trolley (similar, if not exactly the same as the PE one) on a public Christmas display layout for the past 5 or so years.  The first couple years it was on a simple O-27 loop, but it's been running on a fastrack O-36 loop the past couple years.  The pickup slider is about the only thing that's shown much wear, although the axle holes may be enlarging too.  As long as the track is clean it runs fairly well.  If the PE ones weren't as expensive as they are, I might consider picking one up to replace the Fort Collins one for my layout next year.
