Desire to run PS1 locomotives, the large articulated ones on elevated loops.  Set up tiu tracks, using Fixed 1.  Turned Z4000 on, powered up TIU, set the power for the Fixed 1 track at 22 V. used track button on remote to activate the TIU track.  Have a MTH PS1 Y6 on the track with BCR installed in the tender.  Appied 9 V, locomotive starts.  Wait over the 60 seconds to charge the BCR, then use dir key to move the locomotive.

No problem - so far - the whistle button works fine.  The bell button does not work, the tender coupler fires! When I hit the dir button to move in reverse, the bell operates, coupler fires and I can NOT turn the bell off. I even selected the PS1 feature on the remote, same thing.

Running 4.02 software.

Thought it might be the locomotive, so I swapped the Y6 for the Big Boy.  Same thing.

What am I doing wrong?

The bell does not function and the tender coupler fires.

bruce,

1st RJR has a good point PS1 engines are considered conventional, and PS1 engines should be run on voltage about 16 or just under.  It does reduce the wave distortion that P1 engines seem to have trouble handling.  Make absolutely sure you have programed the TIU TR correctly from your hand held remote control.  If you are using a Z4K make sure you have picked which ever handle you want to use, as you program the TR.  Make sure you are using either Var #1 or #2, use a separate power supply to power your TIU thru the side port.  I like the Raido Shack power supply, with adapter plug.  Program your hand held remote with easily identifying numbers and letter for quick reference, especially if you have more than one engine running on different tracks using the TR function.  Most P1 engines will initiate start up at about 8-10 Volts,

some depending on the engine take more.  Turn the wheel slowly till you start the engine moving, then increase the voltage to the speed up the engine, make sure the direction button is sending proper signal to the track, by using it.  Then play with the horn and bell button.  Good luck with your P1 engines, remember all other conventional engines will also run on this TR set up, some companies engines start up slightly different than the Lionel P1's.

Dave,

For Aux power on the TIU you use a Radio Shack power supply.  What model # or rating is this power supply.  Nowhere in the DCS Manual or Barry's book is there mention of the Aux power supply spec.

I currently supply power to the TIU with the Z-4000 thru Fixed 1.  I will power thru the Aux port once I know what the rating of the power supply needs to be.

thanks,

bruce

A Radio Shack product, Enercell Switchable 18/24VAC 1 AMP Power Adapter #273-331 with #273-344 Enercell Adaptaplug M. This AC transformer should be used in the 18 Volt positionAdaptaplug M is a seperate piece that best fits the TIU Aux power plug-in.

Above is a post by MikeT in another thread.

Aux contraire!

Check out page 93:

Another source of power for the TIU's Aux. Power port is the Radio Shack "#273-331 "Enercell™ Switchable 18/24VAC 1 AMP Power Adapter with #273-344 Enercell™ Adaptaplug™ M. It should be used on the 18 volt setting.

This and a whole lot more is all in MTH’s “The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store!

Bruce,

Sooner or later you will understand there is not much Barry has missed putting in his

DCS book.  It's all spelled out on page 93 as Barry has indicated in his post.  Using fixed #1 has a couple draw backs, one it takes up a TIU channel you could be running trains from, and 2nd it does not shut everything down when needed.  This is also spelled out in Barry's book.
