I get that the demand side may be somewhat lacking... but, come on Lionel at lease take a photo and post it if you are offering it.

Some background...

The Rutland had 18 Moguls at the time of the 1913 renumbering.  They were built from 1885 to 1900.  Five were scrapped by 1919, six went during the 1920's but seven ran into the 1930s and two were not scrapped until 1946.

E-1-d CLASS - 144 and 145 were built by Schenectady in 1900 and both lasted until 1946.

I wonder if Lionel produced 18 Rutland Moguls?  Maybe not

Sorry Gary. I think the thread is the only place you will find a photo of the Rutland engine.

I just reread the thread and noticed Rick (aka MineRun)  had diagnosed and fixed the problem early on using off the shelf brass tubing and thinner tires. Obviously went unoticed by nearly everyone including those at Lionel.

The other thing I noticed in your thread is Dave Olsen reported no problem with their production samples. It was only last year I discovered the Moguls made around 2011 had large holes in the front siderods but also shoulder screws with larger shoulders to fill those holes. Perhaps the production samples had the larger screws and the factory shipped the Legacy engines with the screws used on the early 2000 Moguls????

Well, this has made for some interesting reading.  I'm stubborn (and, stupid) enough to hunt one down and try to deal with it.  I don't have any Rutland motive power and I would really like the Mogul... dreams and nightmares ...is their a difference?

Check this out.  I couldn't wait for Lionel to re-issue their mikado's or 10 wheeler's in Rutland so I purchased older offerings and had Harry Heike re-letter, re-number and weather in Rutland.    Another great Rutland guy is Dave_C  He's on a big time Rutland kick.

The moguls differed in a few details, usually headlight location. I have relettered 3 of the them so no reason to wait for a specific version. Lionel has made them with TMCC, Legacy, and conventional. The TMCC versions have no issues and even have a better motor being a small Pittman. Only the Legacy version had the driveline issue. Of the 3 I worked on and at least 3 others I am aware of the only problem was excessive front siderod clearance.

No I recall your thread very well Gary. I missed the part about Lionel destroying them. There must have been a dumpster full of crushed moguls behind the building in NC.

Oh wait, no it was just yours and a handfull of others. The rest ran perfectly.

If I was interested in a moguls I'd be looking for one of the TMCC versions.  Actually the conventional versions offered several years back were fantastic runners as well, and have a respectable sound package to boot. One could always add the TMCC of course.

I was a little distressed after reading about Gary's issues... however, thanks to all who responded I am now confident that the Rutland will be rolling here in New Orleans at some point in 2021!

Here is a thread I posted on relettering a TMCC mogul. They do run slower than this but I was trying to hold the camera and handheld. The only downside of the TMCC engines is they won't doublehead with other engines other than another TMCC mogul and the TMCC version has two chuffs. I swap out the cams to get 4 chuffs. Ironically the conventional versions come with 4 chuffs.

The conventional ones had nice sound, but there's a catch.  If you convert to TMCC, the conventional RS-Lite board is NOT TMCC compatible, it doesn't see the serial data!  So, you have to replace the sound board as well.  I did an upgrade of a conventional one to TMCC, it's a tight fit in there.  I used the TMCC motherboard and R2LC, and the ERR Cruise Commander M for motor control.
