SCARM programming question

In the top tool bar you will find a button that says Tools

Right click on tools and bring down the menu

Select Toolbox

once open the tool box select the down arrow button and then you can select the type of baseboard you are working with.

the selections are

Baseboard Rectangular

Baseboard (ABS Cordinated)

Baseboard ( Displacements)

After you select the type and put in the measurements select Done and it will draw the frame of the baseboard for you to draw your track plan on.

If you are new to Scarm there is information on using the program and its other uses on the Scarm Website

This is where I learned most of what I know about the Program.

Thank you very much for your reply. We live in Michigan but go through West Virginia a lot because our kids live in Raleigh North Carolina. My layout will be based on the Virginian Mountains coal country excetera. By the way, you wouldn't have any murals of the mountains or stuff like that in Virginia.

I am having a problem. I am trying to do the baseboard in feet not inches and all I want is the outline of my table so I can start working on my layout plan. Which of the baseboard programs do you suggest and how can I convert to feet?my layout will be 32 feet long but not a rectangle as it will wrap around various part of my basement.

Hi Jerry A,

You must use inches.

You'll want to use absolute coordinates. It helps to make a sketch ans write down the measurements in inches.

For wxample, let's assume you want an L on the left and the layout is 8' x 12' and 5' wide. So, the 96" x 144" x 60".

The first entry would be 0,0. Click on the green + sign. That creates that point.

Then decide which direstion you would like to work. Let's make the L on the left first.

Next would be 0,96  + sign

60,96  +

60,60   +

144,60  +

144, 0  +

0,0   +

click done.

You could also create a 32'\384" x something rectangle. Then you select the bule line and it will turn red. Place the cursor at a location and right-click and select add a point. Then you can select that point(solid red) and click and drag it. Add as many points as you need. The location is indicated in the low left, by x,y coordinates and the length that you moved it.

If you want to give me the dimensions, I will create the baseboard for you and post the file, so you can work on the track.

SCARM is not programmed for "foot" measurements.  Just multiply 32 by 12 to get the "inch" data you need to plug into SCARM per the directions previously given.

Sorry, but I only dabble in SCARM, so I don't know what measuring systems other programs use.

Hi Carl,

I will start the table dimensions from the lower left hand corner and move up and then to the right. The first vertical dimension up is 7.5 feet. The next horizontal dimension to the right is 12 feet. Next vertical dimension up his 16.5 feet. The next right dimension horizontally his 7.5 feet. The next vertical dimension down his 12 feet. The next horizontal direction is 8.5 feet to the right. Then down vertically 12 feet and to complete the layout table 32 feet horizontally to the left. This should give you a rectangle with a hat on top.

It looks like the 2nd horizontal direction should be 12.5'. That would make the longest side 32'. let me know where to adjust.

Hi thank you and my wife thanks you. We both think it is incredible. If you could adjust the first lower left hand vertical dimensionfrom 8.5 feet to 8 feet and reduce the lower right hand vertical from 12 feet to 11.5 feet it will fit better in my basement.

Also, please advise as how do I transfer this to my ownSCARM personal file program? I assume once is transferred to my file I can just start laying tracks and working on other parts of the layout, correct?

No problem. I'll make those adjustments to the sides. heading out now for about an hour or so.

But, is the bottom 32' in length and does the top need to be longer?

I went down to the basement with my wife this time and measured. If you could be so kind here are more accurate measurements.

From the lower lefthand point going up word the measurement is 7.5 feet. The next measurement going to the right horizontally he is 13.5 feet. The next measuremen upward is 16 feet. The next right measurement is 7.5 feet horizontally. Next vertical measurement down is 11 feet and the next horizontal measurement going to the right is 9.5 feet. The next vertical down measurement is 12.5 feet and now going left horizontally is 19.5 feet we now come up vertically 1.5 feet and complete my layout table going left 11.0 feet. Again if you could be so kind and redo it to these measurements I would be much appreciated it.

It worked out fine except for the cut-out on the bottom. One side needs to adjusted for the 18" notch at 19.5'.

I am only creating the benchwork. It's not a problem.

Right-click the SCARM attachment and select "save target as" and save it to your computer. Then just open it with SCARM.

One side is 18" too long. The bottom ends up being even.

If we get the perimeter as you want it, I can then refine it to how you will build it.

Will it be one large table or perhaps 30" wide all the way around with the center open as a walk-in?

To answer your question I plan to have a cut out space for transformers controls excetera on the right side of the layout. I plan at this time to be able to reach at least  feet at any spot on the the layout.
