I have a SD40T-3 that is missing couplers. It's non powered. Not too familiar with What's inside these things so here's my question. Can I but operating couplers for this? What all do I need? Currently it has nothing inside the shell. No lights no electronics nothing. It's the only non powered MTH loco I have so I have no idea what's supposed to be in there.

Not sure what's available to purchase, I used a PS1 powered Weaver SD40-2 as a donor to power my dummy MTH SD40T-3.
I imagine the MTH SD40-2 parts are also compatible with that Tunnel Motor.

What do you mean by operating coupler? Electro-Coupler or a coupler you can open by pushing the tab with a finger?
Electro-couplers would be challenging. You would have to tether to a Command and control engine and rewire the rear coupler from the powered engine to the dummy.
Just getting standard replacement couplers for an SD40 Dummy Engine can be done from MTH (assuming the still sell parts) or place that sells MTH parts.

Look at items 68 - 72.
I assume you want to leave it as a dummy and are not trying to make it a powered unit. That would be a large undertaking and most likely your trucks will not have the gears needed. You would have a frame and a shell to work with and a lot of cash to pile into it.

Thank you. I was hoping for electro couplers but didn't see how it would work. So my suspicions were confirmed. I'll just go with manual couplers.

You could make the Dummy the lead engine and have the powered engine with electro coupler in the rear. I used to do that all the time with my dummy engine.
