I have been looking for this for almost 2 years and found it this weekend. I recently didn't win one in an e-bay auction and was very disappointed but now that I found this one, I am really glad! It came out to be less than retail even after shipping. What was really amazing was that this was a dealer and until a couple of days ago had *3* sets! Wow. I can't wait to run these.

Bring it over and run it on my layout!
@Keith: Thanks!
@Jim: You bet!
I also bided on the set on ebay but saw it went for over $600--too rich for my blood! Glad you found the set for under retail. Don in Montana
Congrats on the find Eric!
Nice find, Eric. This is without a doubt one of my favorite passenger train sets. Let's see if Lionel has more cars in the future.
Are these the ones that were listed at MSRP of $199 each originally? I am curious, what makes them different, do they have internal details, or...? I've never seen them in person.
Glad you found them.

This set has one coach and the observation car. The original MSRP was $399. They differ in that they are more scale sized to go with the Scale Berk. The other scale cars in the set are supposed to be MSRP at $199 but you can find them for less than $150. This set got expensive mainly because they didn't make very many and it is the only way to get an observation car without customizing.
modeltrainstuff aka, mb klein has a few of the scale polar express cars on sale.
Thanks for the explanation, I had wondered what was different about them but as mentioned never saw one in person or knew much about them beyond that.

They're 19" long vs. about 12" and they run on O-54 or wider curves.
Cheers,
Ken
