I have acquired some postwar sheet metal passenger cars in very good condition, but the window strips have long since fallen off and they're condition has rendered them unusable because of age. I am wondering what my fellow O-gaugers utilize as a replacement. Something that would closely mimic the look of the original window strips. I remember the window strips on my Dad's sheet metal passenger set were clear but with a distinct amber colored tint. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You might say what brand and number is on the cars. Many different cars fall into the category of "postwar sheet metal passenger cars."
Lionel? U&R? Marx? Kits?
Yup have a few on my roster. The material they used was most likely cellulose acetate film. Today we have clear acrylic . To tint the windows , you should be able to find various shades of transparent ( amber yellow green red, ect ) stains in spray , marker or bottle form at a good "Art Supply House " you may even find the film there. If not a search on the internet should do the trick

If these are the cars your referencing, this is what I’ve done for years, and have been happy with the results. Get yourself a roll of Strapping Tape from the big box stores. It comes in a variety of widths. Cut to length and install. Personally I appreciate the extra horizontal detail the tape provides.

Just to add to the suggestions, one can take their clear gallon milk/water jugs (HDPE) and cut appropriately sized strips.
