I recently purchased a MTH Cab forward from a forum member and really like the engine, however this is an older loco and the drive wheel rims are shiny and I would like to blacken them. Any one have a recommendation on the best way to do this?

I have always used Scalecoat "Loco Black" to touchup the drive wheels, including the tires. In the event of a a chip in the paint, I just touch that up again.

I used a black magic marker. Semi permanent and easily removable if you want to sell the locomotive.

Yes - covering the "shiny": one of the easiest ways to improve the looks of an in-service steamer.
I use a high-quality acrylic flat black, applied with a brush (no brush marks with this type paint). I have gotten it (I forget the brand; little plastic squeeze bottles) in the kits/parts department of Hobby Lobby, not the "crafts" section, which carries the low-end (but very handy, also) acrylics.
I should do more of my locos like this...one day...
I blackened some tender wheels yesterday with "Blacken-It".
I tried doing it by dipping a brush in the liquid and brushing it on the wheels, but found quickly the best way was to pour the liquid into a container and set the trucks in it, blackened them quickly. Don't know why a brush wouldn't do it. Glad I found out cause I was getting ready to throw it in the trash, thinking it had gone bad or wasn't up to the job.
