I'm trying to find as many different short (8-3/4"?) starter set boxcars from the MPC and modern eras as I can.

The consist is up to 11 now, #12 and #13 are on their way, and I've got my eye on a potential #14. All real road names so far, and any repeat road names have different road numbers (i.e. the Conrail 9035 and Conrail 9037 from the late '70s, and the reissue Conrail 9001 from the 1980's).

Is there a technical term for these types of cars?

Now that I'm getting down into some of the rarer cars, I'm expecting to find them with higher-end sellers who tend to use proper technical terms.

What's a "plug door" in relation to model railroad boxcars?

Matt: Just my slant on this, but most people would likely refer to these short boxcars as an "0-27" style unit as they were made for these tight radius tracks. I'm not sure they even have a "series' designator like the larger "6464" or "9400" or "9700" series boxcars that Lionel/MPC/LTI/ and Lionel have produced over the years.

I'm no expert on waffle sided cars-I'll let someone else cover them.....

a toy train magazine had an article on just that subject years ago. There are many colorful styles of those short cars. I have many of them, I can put lots behind my locos and have long trains.

I have four of these, lakawanna, 2 Santa Fe, Rock Island

have about 7 of the Yellow Santa Fe, because I like the Yellow.
