Have you ever listed an item on the for sale board here and also in an Ebay auction at the same time and accepted whichever offer came first? Is this a common selling strategy?

Wondering because yesterday morning an an item was listed fs here. A check of Ebay listings to determine whether the asking price was fair revealed that item with the exact photos posted here was also listed for auction on Ebay with an auction starting bid amount identical to the fs price listed here. (The only difference was the OGR fs price included shipping while the Ebay starting bid listed shipping as an additional $15 dollars.) Btw, the Ebay auction had 6 days left and no one had yet bid. After only a short time of being listed here on OGR the item was sold here and within a few hours the Ebay auction for it was ended by the seller.

So, my original question, is this a common practice sellers use? Have you done it yourself or know someone who has? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this method of selling?

While I would assume most sellers would try to sell an item here first and if unsuccessful would try Ebay. Also interesting is it was initially listed for auction on Ebay and the next day posted on OGR's fs board.

Any comments or thoughts from sellers on this method of selling items you no longer use of and want to cull?

Don't know about that happening here, but I quit looking at For Sale Forum here after several times (in last year alone happened 5 times), items for sale and sometimes minutes after item(s) were listed offering to buy 1 or 2 listed cars. Then not receiving an answer back for sometimes as long as 2 days, seller informing me someone bought all the listed cars. Cars were usually of one type, coal cars, flats, boxcars, etc.. It finally came to me that maybe the buyer was holding off to sell the lot rather then ship one or two cars at a time. In fact one seller informed me that a buyer wanted them all but if any sold he wasn't interested in buying. Seller said he hoped I understood his position??

Now, I don't even bother going to the For Sale Forum anymore.

Personally, I think it dumb because you have to pay for the listing on the auction site and waste the time to list it.  List it here first for free and if it doesn't sell then list it on an auction site.

It's free to list it on eBay - they did away with listing fees years ago.......and one gets tires of dealing with bottom feeders here.

I don't think it is very "fair" to list an item here, and on Ebay at the same time. I have listed items here before, first. If they do not sell after a couple of weeks, then I go ahead and list them on one or more other sites. That seems like a "fair" way to do it. If you are looking for top dollar, then go list it on Ebay and don't bother the folks here, because you will not get top dollar here, just a fair price.

However, it is ultimately up to the seller.

We do this in the music world.    Item is listed at Reverb, eBay, a couple local sites.   First come first serve.   My eBay are always buy it now for what they're listed on the other sites, so it's not a matter of getting more money.   Just more visibility.   I clearly state in the auction that it is listed locally as well.

The moment it sells, the listing is removed from the other sites.

I have sold items here but very little. The problem here is that allot of people think you should give it away or ask for free shipping.

As greg has posted I normally post here first then go to ebay. Been on eBay for twenty years without a problem. I have sold over 800 items of  mostly train items on eBay with out one issue.

my only beef with multiple sight listings, would be limited to those that have an item for sale on one sight, and in an auction on another site...If the seller has an item I’m interested in, but it’s locked in an auction on another site with bids happening, then it’s committed to being sold. (unless it has a reserve) ......So, who gets the shaft? .......me, cause I don’t know it’s in an auction? Or the fella bidding on it, whose about to have the rug pulled out from under him, unbeknownst to him obviously.......cause I’ve just committed to purchasing it as a “for sale” item....so far, I’ve never encountered that here, but I have encountered it on other sites....and no, not every ad was clearly marked as such, If it’s clearly stated it’s available on an auction site, and a for sale post, and the terms are crystal clear, then I can make a decision to proceed, or move on......but if it’s listed for sale on numerous places, I have no issues, like others said, delete sold items everywhere as to not upset a potential buyer......courtesy goes a long way....you’ll catch more flies with honey than you ever will with vinegar...............Pat

I am very suspicious of Ebay, I have heard too many horror stories from friends and from rumors.    Probably a lot of exagerations, but still makes me cautious.

I have bought a number of items of this forum and sold a few things.    it seems like the narrower community entails less risk.

In my experience, eBay is slanted heavily in favor of the buyer not the seller.  The few times I had an issue with a purchase on eBay, I've simply contacted eBay and they immediately forced the seller to accept a return and gave me a refund.  Seems like the eBay sellers are the ones taking the most risk.

I can understand this-people want to be able to get maximum exposure and sell their items. The problem is- you get guys "playing both ends against the middle" I have made firm deals only to have the buyer suddenly disappear.Make no mistake- It is because they bailed for a better offer. A good reason not to get emotionally attached to any kind of business deal.

Personally I think OGR should be charging a flat rate for posting items for sale-Craigs list is doing this now on certain items. It would help support the forum. There it is..... Nick

Not arguing for/against this policy.  But is Craigslist doing this somewhere?  They don't here.  I sell on Craigslist all the time.  I think there is $5 fee for cars.  That's all I know of.

OK yes it must be for cars like you said. Sorry for the incorrect information. Nick

But, since we're talking about sell/buy courtesy....  I have a comparable beef with WTB folks who, after you've taken the time to assemble photos/description/offers and sent them via email to the prospective buyer, never reply.  No appreciation for the offer, no expression of why declining the offer,......zip, nada, nothing.  And, yet, a few weeks later re-post their WTB notice for the same item.

In fact, I no longer respond to WTB's on this forum for that reason.

Courteous, timely communication works both ways.....IMHO, of course.

Have seen that a few times where it's pretty clear they wish to purchase an item at way below value, just don't want to say so.

I had a note from my granddaughter so I got on Facebook (Don't usually) after I read what she'd posted. Most of the Lionel engines are Columbia base units or Polar Express and the sellers think we're all rich and stupid. I saw maybe one or two items that might have been thought a great buy. Still, if you've got the time, you might find a wife wanting to get rid of all her husband's "toys" after she finally threw him out (or buried him.) If you're "serious," I'd stick with eBay or right here.

I've had good success selling here on the OGR Forum. Now, I also list simultaneously on Facebook as there are MTH and Lionel For Sale threads with a good amount of traffic.

I, too, have found the OGR Forum a friendly selling place. I've enjoyed using more than Facebook marketplace or eBay--I won't even consider using Craigslist anymore. On the OGR Forum, you generally have more knowledgeable operators and collectors who know what they want, as well as tinkerers looking for old models, parts, distressed pieces, or junkers for their projects. They can see a treasure in some old box of Lionel junk and parts.

I can see why folks might use other venues to sell their train items and related merchandise. I personally prefer this OGR For Sale Forum for selling and the OGR Forum for Wanted items. I trust the folks on this Forum, and have had very little issues with buying or selling.  I am so happy to use OGR and look forward to selling many older TMCC Lionel and Atlas Engines in the near future. Most folks that are fairly familiar with Lionel, MTH, older K-Line, Sunset 3rd Rail, Menards, Marx, American Flyer, of course Tin Plate, on an on, can find their merchandise right here, or get help from a Forum Friend or a Forum Sponsor to locate that item. The TCA grading scale like 10’, 9, 8, accordingly works better right here.  In a nut shell, I feel safe utilizing this OGR Forum. Great thread. Happy Railroading

I've bought many items from OGR'S for sale sub forum without problems. The one problem I did have was when buying an item from the for sale board on another large, well known train forum.

I received an item that wasn't as advertised and the same as OGR, that forum had a disclaimer they took no responsiblity for misleading or false fs postings and wouldn't become involved in disputes between buyer sand sellers. Btw, this seller emphatically stated the only payment he accepted was Paypal Friends and Family. Before the sale I asked if he'd accept a regular Paypal payment and I'd be willing to pay Paypal's cost for it but he refused. At that point I should have walked away since when you pay by Paypal F&F you have no recourse if the deal goes bad unlike a regular Paypal payment where PP will be an advocate for you in a dispute.

So, my advice is NEVER use Paypal F&F to pay someone you've unfamilar with or haven't bought from previously. In that situation always use regular Paypal even if the seller charges you extra for using it.

I see this a lot with fraternal memorabilia I collect for the museum I run at the local Shriners.  It'll be posted on ebay and etsy at the same time; and sometimes they'll drop the price on one and not the other.  I've always wanted to try buying both at the same time (with a co-conspirator) and see what happens....

One thing I've been noticing recently is multiple ebay listings for the same item.  Same pictures, same seller.  I'm wondering if it's a slipup and they accidently relisted it twice or something.  And it's not like generic items where they might have two of the same.

I do a lot of buying and selling on ebay; I've only bought a few things off this forum, but I was very happy with the transactions.
