Forgive this mundane post. I'm rehabbing a fractured vertebra and stuck in a wheelchair on one level of my house .... can't get downstairs to my layout. Major boredom and frustration. Lol.

Because of present time and space constraints, mine is a only a very small, narrow Fastrack switching layout. "Standard O," but the smallest of engines and rolling stock, in limited quantities. With the engines, couplers, and turnouts working perfectly ... I truly enjoy it. Most late evenings I would be down there drilling cars, usually with an ice cold Budweiser or two.

But, for years now, I've planned on modeling the railroad operations in Henry Fords River Rouge Complex in Dearborn, MI.  To build a substantial layout like so many of you guys and girls have. I am truly impressed .... amazed ... at the things I see on this forum.

So, River Rouge is always in the back of my mind. I've been slowly finding and storing equipment to shift my modeling focus from NJ/Pa to the Great Lakes area .... Atlas "Ford" hoppers, a Legacy Pere Marquette 0-8-0 switcher. Even found two different 6-car sets of MTH Pere Marquette hoppers from 2002 at Nicholas Smith Trains in Philadelphia!

Some day. Not too far in the future, I hope.    Maybe I'm not alone?

Happy Railroading.

Jim

Jim, I understand your frustration....

I installed the Stairlift pictured below in our Condo during 2009 when my wife was in a long and very difficult surgical refix and rehab lasting over a year post knee surgery.  It cost as much as 3 nice big Command engines but has proved invauable.

Ironically, in Spring 2010 after a small stroke and major balance problems, I found myself riding the Lift to my unfinished attic train room[turn left at the top of the stairs].

Between the two-rail transportation and using a 30' tether upsstairs on my oxygen concentrator, I was able to at least get to the layout room and do light work. At first, even being able to just get up there and sit and stare at it helped.

Happily you are on the way to healing and will not have a lame situation similar to mine. But keep the "traveling technology"[wheels and rails] in mind as you get older.

Best wishes for rapid and successful healing and starting on River Rouge.
