Smoke fan motor turns with 3vdc but not under DCS command

Sounds like the motor is either drawing too much current, or the smoke fan FET has died on the PS/3 board.  Can you measure the current draw of the motor with 5VDC on it?  Should be in the 30-40ma range.

If the motor passes the ma draw..is the fet replaceable?

MTH techs recently got some additional information on component level repairs of the PS/3 boards, so we now have part numbers and locations for common parts like the smoke, light, and coupler FET parts.  That will allow replacement of those parts if defective.  Sadly, the part that runs the smoke fan appears to be out of stock at all major parts houses, and it has a 46 week lead time!

I have one FET left.  Change the fan motor it is $6.  G

Won't solve you issue, just curious if it smokes running alone in conventional.

I will test the fan motor soon..i have several spares just in case. Where is the fet located on the board? If repair to involved..may i send you the board?

edit: replaced motor with known good working one..still does not turn.

Check, leads from pin on board to motor lead.  To ensure not wiring, break.  After that it is the board.  Yes to sending board.  I can test on bench tester first.  G

Motor to board pins check out as mentioned earlier..For now i need the use of the engine but when i head south to visit friends i will get a hold of you and make arrangements to send the board. My only concern is i heard the fet supply is limited per GRJ comment above.

As I said, I have one.  G
