Hi folks,

I just opened and test ran my gg-1 and very pleased with the all of the features except for the smoke unit.  It barely puts out any smoke when activated.  I use mega-steam (placed 20 drops in before I even programmed the engine) and got a very poor output of smoke...it trails high but very faint.  I had an early JLC GG-1 using the same fluid and smoke was very thick when activated.

Any suggestions?

Greg

Remember, the GG1s had only one steam generator, which generally didn't smoke much anyway. Thus "barely smokes" would be prototypical.

I respectfully disagree.  I have seen YouTube documentary of GG-1 footage where the plume of steam from a GG-1 was VERY thick and full!

For the record I am not using the "constant" option of steam but rather the 45 sec of smoke per every 5 minutes option.

No. Just on and off. + and - on the remote.

Being a legacy engine it should have a low, medium, and high setting for the smoke unit. If you are using a legacy remote make sure that it is entered as a legacy engine so you get the proper icons. Regardless, I would suggest pushing the smoke unit on button 3 times which should put the smoke unit on high.

Success!  The engine is smoking much better now.  I guess the fluid just needed some time to make its way down into the reservoir.   I noticed that the output of air-flow seemed labored and sporadic...not a constant steady stream.  Perhaps there was a "bubble" in the pipeline to the reservoir thus hindering the airflow. I blew into the exhaust hole and that seemed to have done the trick.

Thank you all for your input and advice.

Happy Holidays!

Greg

The new Vision Line GG1 does not have low, medium, or high smoke settings. It is only on or off. The smoke on my #4913 seems more then adequate. I use the newest batch of Lionel Premium Lionel Smoke Fluid and a ZW-L transformer.  The newest batch of Lionel Premium Smoke Fluid performs much better than the previous Lionel smoke fluid that I bought earlier this year.

The engine has stalled six times in one hour after stopping the GG1, and the "reset" does nothing.  I get "1 Blink" from the Cab light. The only way to get it to work again is to re-program the engine again, and again and again and again.

I did fix the rear pantograph that lost its "Flashing spark".  A screw was loose in the box and belonged in the top of the front pantograph. Four of the pantograph screws were loose. One in the rear pantograph was stripped. It's on its way back to Lionel in North Carolina. Hopefully the #4935 won't have these problems when it arrives.

Well, in your original post you were referring to "smoke", and the steam generators in the GG1s didn't "smoke" much. Now, STEAM output from the safety and/or blowdown, is a whole different function.

Just like the rest of them, 20 drops isn't enough to soak the wick in a new engine....and it sure won't last long before it needs more.

I know.  As soon as I discovered the problem I recalled your youtube video demonstrating the need for more fluid in the reservoir and added 20 more drops!

I think it was a combination of a dry reservoir and an air bubble clogging the piping leading to the reservoir.

I'm glad its working now.

I've entered it with the memory stick and also the sensor track. It comes up with all the features on V1.61. The smoke panel comes up with a minus in #5 and a plus in #6. When I push #6, the plus sign, I do not get the LOW, MED, HIGH banner at the top of the display. SO...I figured they just manufactured in a steam boiler that goes on or off.

Makes sense though...20 drops is enough to not burn out the generator and is not too much to flood the engine electronics. The corporate number is 20 drops.
