I've been having trouble with both MTH and Lionel smoke units. It weems they will not start smoking until a shot of air is applied dowm the smoke stacts. I have a brand new MTH GP 9 which really needs a shot of air or else moke starts coming out of the cab windows and ither places as if the smoke stacks are completely blocked which they are not. Had similar problems with Lionel products.

Yes. It's common. When I get an engine new or used, I pop the shell and service the smoke unit. Usually that means pulling the impeller, oiling the spindle, fluffing or replacing the batting, and soaking the batting with smoke fluid before reassembling. Then it will smoke like a champ.
If there is an air lock which happens to me quite often, and quick poof of air down the stacks, clears the passage and smokes fine. However, I know that there can be other situations too.
This is just a reality of smoke units connected to scale smoke exhaust outlets on our models. Pretty much everybody addresses this issue with a puff of air to the outlet.
ThANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR RESPONSES. AT LEAST i'M NOT ALONE IN THIS AGGREVATION. CONSIDERING THE PRICE OF THESE "TOYS" THEY SHOULD NOTE THE PROBLEM IN THE PACKAGING AND MAYBE INCLUDE A SMALL AIR INJECTOR.
