First you download the V1.52 compressed files.

Then you need the Lionel loader software (?).

Then you unzip and copy the V1.52 files over to two separate black modules, (or "modifed" blue modules).

Then you basically follow the instructions on pages 75-76 of the V1.5 User Manual to load the new files into the CAB2 and Base2.

Is that about it?

Only thing is I can't see how you connect the black modules to a computer to load the files, since they don't use any standard serial or USB type connectors. How do you do this?

Is there a connection diagram somewhere?

I do have the Lionel "Y" harness that came with the #990 set. Do you use this somehow?

Thanks for any help.

Rod,

The Y cable connects to the base and the DB9 connector on the computer. The third is unused for the update process. Launch the LSU software. If all is well, it will find the port and connect to the base.

Then you insert a module for the Cab2 into the base and use the LSU software to create that module. You'll have to point it to where you unzipped the update file. Remove that module. Then insert the second module into the base and use the LSU software to create that module.

Plug the first module into the Cab2 and follow the update procedure.

Next, with the second module with the base update still plugged in, follow the procedure to update.

You need to be at least on 1.3 version to update.

Marty;

That manual helps a bunch, thanks. I think I get the hookup procedure now.

I already have a USB to 9 pin serial adapter (for PS_2 sound file upgrades), so I think I am good to go for hardware.

Just need to do John's mod on the original blue modules now.

Moonman; I am led to beleive that I can go straight from V1.2 to 1.52 without passing GO, (and without needing V1.3). But thanks for your kind offer nevertheless.

I will lose any previous stored engine data I guess, but since none of that was mine, no big deal.

The manual says to back up the base data to the computer first, but why do I need to do this?

Thanks to all for the help so far.

If you want me to cook some for you, I can do that.

So John, it's not as simple as copying the V1.52 software to the black modules and installing from there?

If I can't cook my own black modules, then yes by all means I would appreciate your help in getting these cooked.

I'll hit your email off-forum.

Thanks,

You can't. You need a Windows operating system. You can dual boot the Mac with Parallels or Wine or Boot Camp. Various threads on the forum about this. More of a Mac\Apple forum topic, but the LSU is Windows only.

The question is that of ports, Macs haven't had a DB9 serial port is decades.  All my Macs boot into Windows because of needed software for school when I was going (Of course that means the next time I boot into Windows it'll want to do a million updates.  Sigh.).

It's been the same for most computers. That's why you need a usb to serial adapter.

Regarding Windows updates, it's not necessary to update if you will only use it for some basic internal tasks. Just turn off Automatic Updates.
