I would appreciate some help and information concerning powering my small layout.

I have set up a small layout with 2 independent loops and plan to add only a few manual switches.

I run mostly post war and some of the newer Lionel RTR set engines.

I have noticed that the engines I have taken to a local hobby shop for servicing  do seem to function better when hooked up to a Cab1 type system.  I suspect it is the constant voltage to the track that make the smoke units and sound systems work better.

Right now all I use is an old ZW and one of the 80 watt specials that come in the RTR sets.

I am looking for information as to what would be my best option to power this small layout.

It is for my grandsons and for myself to just sit and watch.  something simple and functional for us all.

I understand that this all might seem kinda primative especially when I read and understand how advanced things have become in the model railroad scene.

But I would appreciate any information or suggestions that might help.

Thanks..  Jeff

I'm not sure I understand the problem. Are you saying that your engines don't run at a consistent speed with your ZW? If that's the problem then you simply need to add additional lockons around the layout to keep the voltage consistent. Be sure to keep the polarity so that you don't short out anything.

You can run each pair of wires back to the ZW or you can run a set of master wires under the length of the layout (they're called a bus) and tap into them where you need a power boost.

the only time you have constant voltage to the track is when you are running in command mode.  are your engines command?  command meaning TMCC or Legacy. according to your statement no.

I apologize for the confusion or lack of information.  outside of the 736's, 726's and 2055, I have several engines that are tmcc and have railsounds.  Also to answer another question.  I have two of the fastrack terminal sections per loop with power going to the zw.  the engines run ok and the power to each loop seems fine as the engines run smooth with no hesitations.  but I have notices that the for instance that my small steamer that came with my strasburg set will only begin to really smoke sufficiently when it is run at higher speed and there is more power sent to the rails.  Outside of going to say Cab 1 or legacy is there a way for me to run higher and constant voltage to the rail?  or is it not possible and should i just stick to the zw.   i appreciate your patience and direction.
