One of the interesting things about the Varney F3's was that with the exception of the Burlington, all the other road names used the same paint mask with only the colors being changed to match the railroad.
Don't think anybody would be able to get away with that today...

Cool sets, BT!
Really like the oddity: HObbyLine set. An FM?? Very cool.
FWIW: Here a couple years ago, I watched a Varney "Rancher" set on eBay thinking "maybe"... but passed. I simply cannot allow myself to add more lines to my vintage HO collecting.
Rusty:
Dead right. No way such could be done in today's fastidious modeler's market.
Yes Andre ! a FM ....cant recall the model though .
My American Flyer HO collection is small (only 2 sets) but what I have is perfect !
Both are 1960 production.
Bob:
Thanks for sharing some of your vintage sets with us. I always look forward to seeing them.
Bob
Those AF sets are impeccable!
Athearn Sets ...
Santa Fe Set
PRR 0-6-0 switcher set
AT&SF Pacific Freight
B&O F7 Fast Freight
Lil Hustler
I am SUCH a SUCKER for gorgeous box cover art!!! LOVE those Athearn set box covers!
(And the contents ain't bad, either. )
EDIT:
Just harvested all of those Athearn pics to my "Athearn" sub-folder within my "Vintage HO" folder.
BT: Did you forget to shoot the cover of the ATSF Pacific set?
All:
From a child up I've always had a very active imagination. I just KNOW unwrapping one of those Athearn sets on Christmas Eve would have stirred my imagination to stratospheric heights... shucks... it still does!!!
Andre...
Here you go ...
The box art is identical to the Santa FE F7 set.
and here is the side panel
Thanks BT!
I think my favorite Athearn box art in the above pictures is the Lil' Hustler set. What train nut kid wouldn't have his imagination stirred by all those trains in depicted in that box cover??
A close second would be the box cover art for the PRR 0-6-0 switcher set. It's superb!
Wonder what artist painted those scenes for Athearn? Framed lithographs of them would be super for my hobby room.
Bob:
Thanks again for your ongoing generosity in sharing images of your splendid sets with us. These items are not often seen in such wonderful condition.
Bob
