I have a #15520 Southern Crescent Station Sounds Diner (from 2004).  The sounds are crisp and clear but when the car is running around the track, I'm getting fairly regular static noise from the speakers.  Is this common with these Station Sounds Diners or is there an issue?  Is there a way to add some sort of electrical filter to the line coming from the pick-ups or someplace else in order to stop the static noise?  It is annoying enough to turn off the sounds completely and I would prefer to not have to do that.

Thanks for any help.

My 6-25758 Texas Special Diner operates well from the Legacy remote and conventional operations.

You might try this,

If you are using the Legacy to operate and have the instructions for set up, you might read the manual for troubleshooting.  If the manual allows for reloading using your remote, attempt a reset for the diner.  Follow the manual loading instructions correctly.  Verify you have originally loaded the correct Lionel model number into the Legacy remote.

I know that last answer was well intentioned, but I do not think programming the CAB2 legacy has anything to do with this specific problem related to static or the sounds.

No it's not an electrical filter problem either.

No, doing a reset is not likely to be the fix either. Page 13 of the linked manual. I mean sure, try it but that just sets the function of the radio receiver that also controls the lights- the sounds are solely the rail sounds module. If you got it wrong (example code 5)- I think you might make the lights blink like a strobe beacon. It's bog standard R2LC / RADIO RECEIVER (C08 CODE) so yes, the function code 6

6 = Smoke out as CAB Light

I would first ensure you are not confusing some of the sounds like

  • Rail Clatter: This feature accurately recreates the sound of car wheels passing over rail segments, timed to the speed of the car. It is triggered by motion in Command and conventional modes.

  • Brake Let-Off Sounds: Triggered by motion and stops in both Command and conventional modes, or by direction changes in Command mode.

The manual links also has instructions for taking the car apart which would allow for access to the speaker and the boards.

Next, this car is roughly 18 years old, so the speaker might be failing and just because some things are clear, other loud sounds could distort a failing or marginal speaker.

If it's not the speaker, then I would unplug and reseat the module rail sounds and power board in the car to ensure it was not slight oxidation on the contact pins or just loose connection.

Also, speakers and magnets tech have improved significantly since 2004.

A good 8 Ohm 50mm (AKA 2 inch) speaker can be sourced (just google 8Ohm 50mm speaker ) that is one heck of an upgrade over the old paper cone stock speaker. This with a much stronger and yet smaller magnet, longer cone throw with a rubber edge, and plastic cone is just a night and day over a paper cone IMO

Heck, you might even have to go as far as reseating (taking out, putting back in) the chips on the railsounds 4 board as that is another connection that has oxidized and could be the source if it is really static sounds.

That requires the correct chip puller. Google "Tool PLCC IC Extractor (WTS-610)"

Also, another problem could be a failing rail sounds power board.

Lol 😆

@lionelflyer lol I knew if this non technical thought for your Diner static issue was posted,  all of the electronic wizards in the world would come to your rescue to get your diner speakers corrected.

It is like they can't stand the novice modeler to come out to assist anyone on the forum.  They are like ants to honey.  No no no, that's wrong.  You must try this!

Although, I figured the gunrunner would have been the first to say he's totally wrong....😆 why did he waist his time!

Three years ago had to program the Texas Diner three times before it finally worked correctly from the Legacy.  I just hope you get your static removed because I so love the action and sound from my Diner.  I would have more diners if Lionel made them in a smaller size so they may operate on the 042 curves....

Please do not get me wrong, I appreciate all you intelligent guys, just ask me.😆

I learned much of what I know now by reading these forums every day and trying to answer the questions (even when I could not post here)- often doing research and lookups in the background. In that same note, I get it wrong sometimes and get smacked down when that happens. I take it in stride and often learn something from getting wrong just as much if I got it right.

If you want to become an expert or just enjoy the benefits of knowing much more of the technical side of things- which can save you money and improve your overall train experience- read every post, even if you don't care or don't have the item. Attempt to find the answer on your own as if you intend to answer the question. Again, you tried to answer, that's good even if it simply was a mismatch between your experience with a Legacy version and this experience with a TMCC sound car.

I cannot stress it enough, I learned what I know today from using the forum as a resource. It's a resource of both a constant stream of questions and topics every single day and then also answers. If you just start a habit, read the new posts of a given day like it's the news, it doesn't take long, it's entertaining, and you might mess up and learn something.

Thank you all for the help.  I'll try pulling the boards and cleaning the contacts.  Replacing the speaker might be a good idea also.  I'm wondering if it is a fault in the "rail clatter" as the static like noise seems to occur when the car is moving and I don't really hear the rail clatter type noises.  Hard to believe these are 20 years old now.  Where did the time go?
