I keep my dcs engines in a yard.   The tracks in the yard are individually turned off and on with toggles.

A normal operation session is like this.  First Power up TIU with aux power.  Then Power up main line tracks with TIU channels.  Then Go to yard and turn on yard track toggle.

It seems like every time I do this the DCS engine starts in neutral, sounds and lights on.

I can then choose startup on the remote to get to normal DCS operations.

If I check signal strength on the yard track I get 10.

Why is it that the engines start in neutral instead of off?  I am pretty sure that engines starting on the main line start normally.

In order to start up under DCS, a PS2 or PS3 engine must "see" the DCS watchdog signal, which is only issued for 5 seconds when any TIU channel's voltage goes from 0 to any other value. If the engine doesn't see the watchdog, as in when it's siding is later toggled on after channel power has been turned on, the engine comes up in conventional mode.

This and a whole lot more is all in The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition, available as either an eBook or a print book from MTH's web store.
