Have a 0-8-0 PRR Flyer loco- I want to upgrade the motor. Anyone have experience w/ this- what can motor will fit, given the pitch of the worm gear, and mounting setup??

Any help here? I think the tricky part will be the worm gear.
Does it have the small flat motor?

I sent one of the Hogwart's locomotives to Frank Timko and he shoehorned the larger motor into it. Not sure what he did about the worm, but I suspect it took the one off the set motor that it shipped out with.

Yes- w/ yellow end bells, and a wimpy flywheel!

I did a swap on a starter set 0-8-0, same engine but with conventional. I did it to see if it was possible, which it is, but don't care to do another one. Three obsticles to overcome, the gear on the small motor has to be swapped to the new motor. Likely the flywheel will have to machined down to fit in the shell, and lastly the motor mount area has to be opened up. At first glance it looks like it will fit but it won't directly. Not sure its worth paying someone to do the swap. What appeared to be a 30 minute job turned into a 6 hour job.

That's a LOT of work!! My guess that the main problem was the worn gear swap. After that 6 hours, and the cost of the new motor, does it run 6 hours worth of better?? Also- what specific can motor did you use??
Thanks- good info. I might try it, just because...
I would first try and save the original worm, but as a backup buy an assortment of plastic worms, also from the motor vendor. Machining the drive wheel for a traction tire-- probably not, though.

I predict the plastic worm will last about 9.8.7.6.5.4.3.2.1... BOOM!
FWIW, it does make a big difference. I had the Polar Express Berkshire with the small motor, and then I got the Series-II with the larger motor. Pulling power is much better with the large motor.
