Hello Everyone,

Ginny and I are looking for suggestions for a LionChief set for a middle school aged boy who had his train set stolen. Two years ago when the boy was in elementary school (my wife's class), Ginny and I gave him a set of Lionel trains (not remote) which he has loved. The family was destitute and had no opportunity to get a Christmas present for the boy. The set was recently stolen and Ginny received a letter from the boy's older sister (letter below) who has asked where the set came from so she could try to replace it. She is offering to pay for the set and did not ask us to do it, but Ginny and I would like to pitch in and replace the set. Could some of you give me suggestions for a LionChief set in the $200-$250 range?

Thanks, folks.

PS: A thousand thank you's for all the fantastic members of the OGR Forum who have e-mailed me to pay for the set. Ginny and I are not going to accept donations at this time as we have decided to pay for the set. We will, however, come to you this Fall, before the Holidays, to ask for donations for needy kids who love trains.

My name is Elizabeth Santana and my brother Daniel Santana was a student of yours a few years ago. During that time you and your husband were nice enough to bring him a train set, which he loved. Every since he got that train set he would play with it and every year for his birthday he would ask for something new to add to it. He was so proud to have this train set and so excited that he received it from you. He even made it a tradition every year to put it around the Christmas tree and keep it running for the whole month of December. Unfortunately last year his whole set was stolen. He was very saddened and hurt by this and has continually asked for a new set. He will be graduating middle school in a few weeks, and we would really like to get him a new set. Since he was little many things have changed but one thing that hasn't is his love for trains. If you would be kind enough to tell us where you found his last train set at we would love to purchase him a new one. Thank you so much for everything. Hope to hear back from you soon.

Thanks again,

Elizabeth Santana

The Lion Chief Scout set (2-4-2) and Pennsylvania Flyer set (0-8-0) both seem to be in stock at several forum sponsors. I checked Nassau Hobby and Legacy Station, they both have them in stock. Also noticed Nassau Hobby is having a 10% off Father's day sale until the 21st.

The Scout set is around $200 and the Pennsylvania Flyer is around $220, both street prices, MSRP's are slightly higher.

Here are the links: Scout set - Flyer set

I didn't see the diesel set Goshawk posted above at either of the dealers I looked at so I didn't link to it. Maybe some of the other dealers would have that one?

Good luck with your search and I hope you find something that Daniel really likes.

Eliot,

I know we've disagreed with some things here but....you've got a heart of gold. Thanks for restoring my faith in humanity this week!

I also would agree that the PRR Flyer is a great choice. I've got one of the older 4-4-2 transformer sets and it is still chugging along.

Yea, what did he have before?

I was recently shopping around for a Lionchief plus Burlington GP7 and Mario's Trains had the lowest price and they have free shipping on ordered over $200.00 plus they are having a fathers day sale so they knocked off another $15.00.  I've bought from them several times and have never had an issue and usually I receive the item in a couple of days.

I would concur with the Pennsylvania Flyer set as the set of choice. 6-30233

A few extra straights, 74 watt wall pack and a set of 3 rechargeable AAA batteries and chargers and some extra Lionel premium smoke fluid.

The included wall pack is on the edge of being adequate. He may not be able to replace batteries and smoke fluid.

I will gladly help. Let me know.

Well, it looks like either the Pennsylvania Flyer set with remote control or a traditional Lionel set available at Trainz with an 80 Watt transformer, die cast loco and better consist. Any thoughts? They are both about the same price.

Once again, thanks to the many members who have offered to pay for the set or provide trains and accessories. We love all of you.

It's a fake coupler; it doesn't actually work.  But I too would vote for the Pennsylvania Flyer 0-8-0. Love that set.

Oh well maybe a "swap" project for him?

"Hey, I know about this train forum"

Most cars can still be uncoupled at the engine by magnetic accessory track.

Many postwar diesels, and switchers had at least one dummy coupler, and some tenders had dummy couplers. So its only "new" on steam really

The car couplers have the tab for manual operation.
