Knickerbocker Transfer
About two years ago I documented the kit bashed build on this forum of 2 Korber Ted's Textiles background buildings.
At the time I had no industry associated to the building and didn't know what to name it. I was developing a new area on the layout and I did however know where it was going to be placed. I decided to wait and see how the scene developed before I named the building.
I loosely model industrial switching heavily influenced by the Long Island Railroads freight operations in and around Long Island City. As the scene developed on the layout I realized the answer was staring me in the face all along, and it had a family connection. Back in the 1960s my father worked for Roto Broil. Roto Broil was a manufacturer of small electrical appliances and there main claim to fame was a kitchen counter top rotisserie that was about the size of a present day microwave. They also produced hand held mixers and hair dryers. They were located at 33-00 Nothhern Boulevard in Long Island City. There factory backed up against Long Islands yard "A" and they had siding. Apparently they have a cult following. Goggle Roto Broil and several results come up.
This is how the scene came together.
By no means an exact copy, it does capture the feel and flavor I was looking for. Still some scenery detailing that has to be done and some kind of roof over the loading dock to keep the workers dry.
