If I buy a 3rdRail locomotive with TMCC, what kind of performance should I expect? Is it as good as Vision?

Not sure which version is in this engine, but I would think a upgrade to ERR
DC Commander would give you much better low end speed and the ability to have 100 speed steps versus 32 steps. Which would give you finer control.

I suppose it depends on just what sort of "performance" you are looking for. For smoothness of operation, the Sunset/3rd Rail product equipped with ERR will be excellent. Since the "Vision Line sound package" is totally exclusive to Lionel, you will only get RS4/RS5 sounds with ERR.
All of the new 3rdRail engines are equipped with ERR cruise and their latest Railsounds. Not quite Legacy but very smooth. Before ERR they came with TAS EOB and RS4 and prior to that TAS TMCC without cruise. You will have to have an idea when it was produced to know for sure what system it has.

I am looking at a 3rdRail Hudson.
The J3s came with TAS EOB. The J1a and J1D came with TAS TMCC, no cruise. Both could be upgraded to ERR if desired.

Don't bother with a DC Commander. Spend a few extra bucks and get a Cruise Commander. Your long term enjoyment is more important than a few dollars "saved" at conversion time.

Which "Hudson"? Sunset/3rd Rail has made quite a few different New York Central "Hudson" models. Then there was also their run of CB&Q Hudsons.
