Anyone have any experience repairing this model? I’ve got one that’s pretty beat up. Ran a little rough when I first put it on the track, until the belt drive broke. It has a few parts that are bent as well.
I’m gonna try to make a project out of this and install DCC and sound while I’m at it - figure I can’t make this model any worse, but I could bring it back to life better than ever.
Not even sure where to turn for parts. Help please.

I have one from the latest run. I assume that is the one you are talking about. There was another Sunset run back in the 80s I believe.
I doubt sunset would have parts, but they might tell you a source for the belt.
When I got mine, I thought it was way too heavy for what it was. I removed the weights from both hoods and that gave me space for a decoder and what I feel was a better weight. It will still pull at least 15 freight cars on level track. It is a little noisy but a good runner with nice low speed control.

There are definitely other sources for the rubber belt (I think the answer is knowing it's size, and then a Google search) and Jim is correct about removing some/all of that weight. You will likely have to straighten the bent parts. Been a while since they were produced. Might be able to find a junker on the big action.

There have been topics that mention the 3rd Rail drive belts before. A xsearch or two may turn up some information for you.
