I have been reading the For Sale or Trade forum and I have noticed recently that some of the more senior (age and respect) of the hobby are selling brand new in the box engines.  These guys are not dealers.  They are just a hobbyist who may have trouble controlling their craving for trains.  Is this you?  If so, how many new in the box engines do you have sitting around that you bought to own but have never had a chance to run it yet, or maybe never?  I have none.  All my engines get worked at least once a year.  But I have a small collection: only 13 MTH Premier and 3rd Rail engines.   What say you?

I have a friend that I have been working on his Layout now for about 6 Months now. At first it was to maintenance His Locomotive Fleet which has not been done for Several Years now including installing BCR's Into his Engines.  This was the Discussion that we had before I arrived at his home. Boy was this an understatement.  The Gentleman in Question pulled 9 Engines off the layout So I Serviced these and then the Bombshell dropped as he started to pull out NIB Lionel/Mikes train House/and williams engines that he has collected over the Years and just put on A Shelf. It has Taken me this long to do these engines which now according to the Records that I have been keeping Score 300 that I have worked on.

With this said He is a Retired Railroad Worker and over his years of service he has collected and sent home these engines. We have worked on the Layout added DCS and now we find a NIB TMCC pair of F-3's Which he knew the story of when and where he got these engines and he Brings me a TMCC set up that he had in storage.  So now we get to finish Hooking up the Two DCS Tiu's and now a Tmcc set up.  He never ceases to amaze me.

Are you writing a book?

Pennsyk4 - Not writing a book - just an observation.  I was wondering how many were hording engines just to own them.  I am always watching the for sale and trade forum for selected deals.

Marty -  The OGR For Sale and Trade forum is the best deal in O Scale by far.  I know, I bought a beautiful MTH Premier Challenger from you on this forum.  By the way, I was curious if you were hording or not.  I was thinking that maybe you were starting to feel your mortality and starting to sell off your collection so your wife and kids don't have to do it.  But I meant no disrespect.  I assume you got a good deal from the rich guy selling off his collection.   They were good prices.   But I am only interested in UP, SP, Santa Fe, and PRR Lines.  So far, I have not struck at any bait.

Engineer Joe - Nothing for sale yet.  Depends what pops up on the forum.  I really can't handle any more than 13 engines.  If I buy something new, something has to go.  You will see my ad on the For Sale and Trade forum if I need to change out an engine.

ptalar,  how about my NIB Lionel F-7 I am selling on the forum?   You would look great running it.   Hit my email as I have everything you mentioned.

I have found some excellent trains on this forum.  I purchase often from here.  My life long hobby has been owning, driving and selling Corvettes.  This has trained me to make sure everything is in perfect operating condition at the time of sale.

If I run into something I cannot fix, I call on my good friend Locolawyer for help.

I'm with you Alan. As a matter of fact, in addition to being a great friend, I think Marty has become my LHS.

Now if he only had an I-5 for me.

I say you have the affliction that you describe. Fret not. It's in the early stages. But, you are already in denial. Rationalizing with a once a year run. Counseling or a large engine yard with a turntable and roundhouse will help.

I am not so sure that this is a new trend on the OGR Buy/Sell boards. Many Forum members have found that this is the best place to sell and buy O-Gauge equipment. You are correct that if a Forum member (senior citizen or not) has equipment for sale, it is probably because they no longer have a burning desire to keep them.

This probably happens to most of us. If I don't have room for equipment and it is something that I probably will not run, it is time to sell it rather than store it under the benchwork.

I really was not targeting the older guys on the forum.  I was just making an observation that some of the more senior guys of the hobby, those who are older and are well respected, appeared to be selling an inordinate amount of new or rarely run engines lately.  I was sort of curious about what was going on.  Were they realizing they bought too much new stuff that went unused and finally selling it off?  Were they realizing their mortality and selling off their collections to save that burden from their wife and kids.  Just curious about what was going on here, that's all.

Marty knew where I was going and he cleared things up for himself.  He actually said in a previous post he was sellling off a collection he bought from some rich friend of his.  He must of bought it cheap.  Now selling it off at good prices.  He was one of the guys who prompted me to post this thread.

I have 50 or so MTH Premier Steamers and have run maybe 5 of them all others have never seen the light of day.  I have at least that many premier diesels that haven't seen the tracks.  Then the Lionel sets has done over the years not one has the seal broken.  I buy them because I like them and plan to use them one day but if not I am not too worried about it.  If I ever get desperate for money I have a lot of inventory I can turn into cash but I am a collector as well as an operator so I buy what I like and unfortunately that leads to a lot of stuff that still is brand new in the box but it doesn't bother me one bit.  Hopefully my nephews will enjoy them when I am gone but if not they will have a nice little stash to buy a car or whatever they want.  I am just 40 by the way so they will have to wait a while I hope.

Yes it is tough.  I have no more display room in my house.  If I buy any more engines it will have to stay in a box.  I don't like that.  I like to put them on display.

I also have to deal with WAF (wife approval factor).  She can only stand the engines in the 13 places they are displayed.  And I would feel guilty storing new engines in boxes, to me, that would be hording.  On display is ok.  Some of these engines are just too beautiful to sit in a box.  They are exquisite pieces of mechanical engineering art to me.

By the way, I am 56, so I am a senior also.

I have a few dozen locomotives and other "stuff" I plan to dispose of over the course of this year, but I'm not yet sufficiently motivated to get a list together.  Many of the items are new in box and they range from RMT Beeps and the like to MTH Premier and probably a couple of Lionel TMCC or Legacy units.

When I do become sufficiently motivated, I'll list 'em all on the forum...the only place online that I will be selling them.  May haul a few to local train meets/shows from time to time, but more likely I'll sell everything right here on this forum.

I guess it's also time to begin thinking of selling off a whole bunch of Marklin HO as well (most new in box), but I just can't quite bring myself to do it because I really like the quality of those trains.

Over the years I got carried away in my passion for articulated engines and eventually collected six--never ran but one, the MTH CC&O Challenger. I have now disposed of the Y3 and the EM-1 via the Forum. The Y3 [UPS] arrived with the pilot trashed and the EM-1[USPS] arrived in perfect condition I am happy to hear.

The difference I think---for the EM-1, I used an outer shipping carton longer than the original box and built in several inches of front end crush resistance to absorb the compression when it is thrown on the concrete floor.

[I long since got rid of original outer cartons and when shipping I go to a local Overstock Carton Company].

All (well, 95%) of my locos have been out of the box and at least TRO. I have more than

I would like to have, yet I do not want to sell them when push comes to shove because: I bought them because I liked them, they were not impulse buys and what good would

it do me to sell 5 or 6? I don't need the money and the space freed up would be

marginal. I have more often had seller's remorse than buyer's remorse.

I don't have "hundreds", but 100-plus? Sure; easy. From a Beep to a Lionel AC-9 2-8-8-4 - and in between. Plus a little PW (a touch) and Marx (touchy-er). Mostly steam, some diesel and electric.

The thing that "annoys" (poor baby) me about having a bunch of equipment - this includes rolling stock - is that none of it gets used a lot, so I don't have the pleasure of getting to

know and enjoy any of them like old friends - in other words, like when I was a kid and

had ONE 2055 Hudson and ONE Burro crane and ONE PRR 6464 boxcar...you get the

picture.

I wish that I could have focused on a dozen locos, 60 freight cars and one passenger

set/train. But that just isn't my personality, I guess. I'm too much the real-world railfan

to not have broad interests.

I did not in any way believe that you were targeting "senior" members or their was any negative connotations to your remarks. I think that you make a good point that if no one in the family beyond the member has any interest in the trains, it is smart to be proactive AT THE RIGHT TIME.

Members sell their equipment for a variety of reasons. This is the best place to start that process.

I consider myself very lucky in that I never succumbed to the collecting bug.  It's not that I can't be obsessive about my likes and desires, but I have always just bought to operate.  It has also helped that I have limited the road names that I will run, but on the other side of the coin when you like UP and BNSF and their fallen flags, there is a lot to choose from.

The Buy/Sell board here is definitely the way to go though.  We are fortunate to have this resource.

I'm like some of the other members here, I buy what I like and that has created the problem of having too much stuff. I just turned another milestone as to my age on March 7. Which has me starting to look at my current situation, being retired for a couple of years now and with having some health issues. I am blessed to have a understanding and younger family of which I still have 2 daughters in high school. This has held up our decision on wanting to move elsewhere for at least a couple of years. We want a bigger home so my wife's parents can come and live with us and also with a area for a large layout.

Since I have no layout or room to display any of my trains, everything is still in their boxes. I know have over 250 engines and motorized units that have never seen a track and a few more that have only been run once. The thing that hurts me the most is that I have not had the pleasure to run any of my trains foe a while now. I consider myself more of a operator as opposed to a collector. At times I have considered joining a operating group so I could run some of my trains but I have felt that I never had the time when to when I was still working.

I did sell a bunch of trains about 7 years ago but really nothing since, and that was before I became a forum member. I'm getting ready to let some of my engines and other trains go. I just need to find some of my other trains that I have on my inventory list that I have not located yet. And most of those trains are from the MPC era which I have had the pleasure to operate years ago.

Some of the things that I have decided to let go will be TMCC engines since I now have the Legacy versions of them. And I have been debating selling some other things like cars and accessories. About 90% of what I have is Lionel and most of them are being modern, scale or operating. But right now everything is on the back burner until this weather breaks.
