Happy Halloween Switcher Saturday crew!

For those new to the crew Switcher Saturday is all about celebrating the smaller locomotives that do the big work of railroading.   This thread is always open to all scales and gauges,  typically with a heavy dose of 3 rail O.

For this weekend's kickoff,  we have US Army Switcher and a load of jack-o-lanterns passing by what appears to be an intergalactic crime scene!

20211029_225727So shows us your pictures videos and vignettes!  Tell us your tales and swap your stories.   Any thing somehow Switcher related is fair game. Imaginary bonus points for all those who include a Halloween related component

Have a great weekend everyone!

Boston & Maine EMD GP7 #1562 is a Sunset/3rd Rail model.  ALCO S3 #1274 is an MTH Premier model with PS3. Both locomotives were delivered to the B&M in 1950. GP7 #1562 had 1500 horsepower - S3 #1174 had 660. #1174 was damaged in a roundhouse fire in Springfield, Massachusetts, repaired by ALCO, and returned to the railroad in 1957 as S4 #1274 with 1000 horsepower. Shown on my 12’-by-8’ model railroad. The building at the right in the first photo is scratch-built from styrene. The others are from laser-cut wood kits, which I prefer.

Yay Spooky SWSat is on the rails and this weeks post is full of Ghost Trains!

Thanks for getting things rolling every week @jhz563. Earth has to try to save those cows. Love those wonderful switchers Mel and Patrick.

This weekend I am posting what I consider the first Lionel Halloween set. I had considered it a grail find ever since I saw it as a kid at the Landmark Mall Sears in 1982.

This is the Black Cave Flyer Set and as you can see the main appeal was the Cardboard backdrop and vinyl floor mat with swamps and lava (sadly missing on my copy) The set is led by a plastic bodied 0-4-0 with glow-in-the-dark plastic parts and all the cars were undecorated. The train is not that great but I love this set so much.

DF74B3B8-6067-4FD0-A6B6-60577C6608E6

There was a sticker sheet with glow in the dark stickers to finish the cars and backdrop.

The set was Lionels attempt to cash in on the Dungeons and Dragon’s craze of the early 1980’s. Some of my childhood toys that fit the theme are in the pictures as well thanks to my daughter who helped me with setting this up.

There were a few other switcher based sets with cardboard and vinyl parts like the L.A.S.E.R. Sci fi set or the Army set but none were as elaborate as the Black Cave Flyer. Lionel did not make a specifically Halloween set until the early 2000’s. There was a separate sale Transylvania General 4-4-0 and later a Docksider 0-6-0T before eventually a standard starter set 4-4-2 led set.

Have a great weekend everyone.I can’t wait to see what you guys post.

Also be sure to answer that knock on the door in the dark hours of the night tomorrow. Be sure to offer something to satiate those goulies and goblins or they will I’m sure play some nasty tricks on you…..

also the dentist is waiting for you next week. Bwah Ha Ha Ha!!!!

Happy SWSat!

No Halloween trains on the RSJ&B so this week we find Santa Fe 2003 (RMT BEEP), doing one last pick up before it heads to the shops. The yard master has ordered a ERR mini-commander with sound upgrade for the prime movers. The switcher will be assigned to remote control duty in the yards after it comes out of the shop.

This will be the shop foreman's first attempt at installing ERR controls so we will see how it goes.

The crew on 200 are ready to take the cars out of town as soon as 2003 moves off the main.

I squeezed in a late season round of golf this week (In NY this is late), and saw this on the course. The only thing missing were the ghosts and goblins .

Happy Halloween!

TALES OF THE DOCKSIDER

Greetings, SwSat folks, from Wells, ME.  Your Yardmaster is vacationing today, so a trip to the archives for an oldie but goodie is in order.  NYC shop switcher X-8688 is shoving B&A 4-6-6T no. 403 into the shop.

And not switcher related, but I can’t resist posting, is an image taken from the deck of the condo we’re renting.
