Found this picture in a box of family photos, at first I had no idea what it was (other than a note on the back saying "New Hampshire"), but after Googling around a bit I found out it's from the Mount Washington Cog Railway, year unknown.

 

Here's a recent picture of one of the Cog's steam critters, apparently the steamers have all been replaced with Bio-Fuel diesel critters over the last 10 years or so.

Yay! SWSat is on!

I had to run some errands before I could check in and post. Unfortunately I had to take the subway to do them and my line is down for track work this weekend. I forgot so it took longer than I wanted it to. On the up side I wandered around and got some great track work shots. I will be amazed if they can put back in this crossover before my early Monday morning commute.

As you see here right at the dive back under Broadway at 136 St. There is a center now rarely used express track with a crossover that is being replaced. There are three work ballast trains lined up heading down to 125 st station on the 1 line. The work trains are switcher-redbird-swither followed by some ballast cars. The hi-rail Crane is moving ballast and the road Crane lifts out track panels.

In this next shot the work train is on the Viaduct over Manhattanville Valley as you can see on the west side of the track there has been a lot of construction by Columbia University and most of the old Milk processing and bottling plants are gone except for the Sheffield Farms plant which is now part of the Columbia Uni Graduate Art school Studios. Just over the second switcher unit is the tower of Riverside Church.

I caught the Driver climbing back into the close clearance cab to move this train on the Viaduct. GE #77

This week I found one of my “grail” pieces. A NYCentral Tri power unit or enough of the body for me to make a better go of one. These were neat hibrid units the tri- power being diesel/battery/third rail.  These were used a lot on the west side of Manhattan including the area of my apartment the Manhattanville Milk Yard. I “started” making one a few year ago and did I not get far. 

The sides and patterns are 17/64 which I am fine with.

Clearly I need a new chassis. This was what I was going to use for my shorter unit. The roof and one roof end are actually the wood casting patterns. Funny stuff. I had no idea these where even out there to find. I know it may not look like much but I am so happy to have found this.

Good afternoon fellow SWsat friends!  Thanks, Rich, for notching out the throttle and getting us rolling today!  I really enjoyed everyones photos and videos .... thanks everyone!

My son and I had the pleasure of taking this trip up to the top of Mt. Washington, NH back in the 1990’s. So glad we did! Absolutely magnificent scenery and views on the way up and down. The summit was fogged in and the wind blowing so hard you had to hold on to the rocks to stand up. In other words, a normal day in the windiest place on Earth. Highly recommended!

It is a warm, clear day for the start of June 1949.  A photographer was waiting to take some promotional pictures for a local factory that makes RndToIts when he notice the yard lead for a PRR branch line below the office window.  While waiting for the company's owner to show up he took some shots of passing trains.  The first was an unfamiliar 0-6-0 switcher pulling a string of hoppers.  The owner's secretary, who watches these trains every day, said it was a USRA design that Pennsy called a B28.

The next engine he knew well.  It was a A5 he use to see as a child working the docks.  The little engine still sounded like a machine gun as it strained to move some express cars.

The next engine he photographed was a B6.  He was impressed with how much bigger this engine was compared to the other two.  He also knew this was a real workhorse for the Pennsy and there were still quite a few around.

The next engine was a diesel pulling some tank cars, which made him smile.  He knew the Pennsy was late going to diesels and these little 44 Tonners were around eight years before the Penny got around to buying one.  It is probably less than a year old.

Well, the owner just arrived so its back to work.

NOTE:  All the freight cars and B28 are Atlas O, the A5 and B6 are K-Line, the B-60 is Lionel, and the 44 Tonner and R50 are MTH.
