Hello everyone. I'm putting together a Virginia Blue Ridge Railway train (http://www.whippanyrailwaymuse...a-blue-ridge-railway) based on what I can find in old photos and videos - mostly a mix of Southern, N&W, C&O rolling stock.  The following two screen shots are from Penn Valley Pictures "Steam in the South in the 60s", and show two tank cars - maybe 8,000 or 10,000 gallons.  Can anyone identify what they are?  Unfortunately those two shots are the best I could get, and I haven't seen any photos.  My hat's off to you if you can figure it out!

49:  Bear in mind that the newer style, welded, frameless tank cars were not available until about 1960 or so.  Before that, tank cars were riveted tanks, steel frames and sizeable domes.   Depending on the era that you want to project, there were noticeable differences in cars that were built earlier and those that would be considered "modern" by today's standards.

There is still some question as to whether the new tank cars have the strength needed  to protect residents located near railroad tracks.  The terrible disaster in Canada last summer raised some questions as to the safety of these modern, frameless tank cars.

I have been looking for those sizable (large) domed tankers put I cannot find one, I remember seeing them in the 50's a lot on the B&O trains in SW Philly. If anyone knows where to find them I sure would like to know.

The first car is hard to see.  I'd guess that it is an FMC Chemicals tank car.  The second is duck soup.  That is a Diamond Shamrock Chemicals tank car.  It may be in caustic soda service.  The Lionel 6-19626 would approximate it although there have been several other Diamond Shamrock tank cars available in 3 rail.

The Lionel 6-17289 would also nicely represent the GN box car.
