I'm in the process of installing a TAS EOB Drop In and was wondering the chuff signal that the board generates is sufficient to drive a Lionel (~5V) fan motor directly or should I install a little transistor current amplifier? I don't have any TAS turbo smoke units so don't know if they have an amplifier built in or not. The Lionel smoke unit was added to this engine and replaced a puffer unit.

The instructions give many options including wiring the chuff "input" (sic) to the TAS turbo smoke unit. This same EOB terminal is also wired to pin 17 on the R2LC for chuff. The term input is throwing me off too but I assume its the signal out to trigger chuff on the sound board as it replaces the chuff cherry switch.

Well, I don't see any clarification in the instructions, so I have no idea what the capability is.  This is one of the TAS boards I've never actually used.  I've used the SAW, EOB, and UCUB boards, but never had the occasion to use this one.  Personally, I'd much rather put in the ERR Cruise Commander M, I like it's operation a lot better, and it even includes outputs for markers and ditch lights for free.

Actually this engine came with a Lionel installed Cruise M which I am replacing with the EOB drop in. I agree the Cruise M is smoother but I am interested in the synchronized chuff this board will provide (hopefully).

Here is an engine that came with cruise and one chuff/rev. Two chuffs I can live with but not one.

If I don't get any more replies I'll install a buffer amp if for no other reason than to isolate the sound board from the smoke fan.

I believe it was Rod here on the forum that smoked his RS board by trying to wire it for synchronized chuffs, so I'd recommend the buffer.

FWIW, you can get synchronized chuffs with a simple circuit from the Cruise Commander M, schematic below.  This is the board that ERR sells as the Smoke Fan Puffer Board.

One of the many reasons I like the Cruise Commander is now Legacy has the R100 mode built in to use the 100 speed steps of the ERR cruise boards.
