In case anyone wondered where Sam went for awhile.....

In late October I got the almost worst phone call of my life.

My wife was on a church mission trip from Iowa to Sturgis SD to help rehabilitate a home.  On an off day when not needed, she met a high school friend to go to lunch and catch up on old times.

As they drove, somehow the car got bumped or cutoff and careened across I90 over the median into a westbound semi.  The hospital called saying I should get there ASAP.  She suffered shattered hip socket (new hip ball and socket) and tear to aorta (repaired).  It was touch and go for many days.  She is back to her personality wise, but will be in rehab for at least a year.

As a consequence, it means she very most likely be on the house ground floor, no stair climbing.  Which means the layout we labored over will very most likely come down, with bed and potty chair etc gracing the space.  But if it speeds the rehab, so be it.  Besides, it gives us a chance to dream big for next build.  We learned alot from this one and experienced plenty of oopsies (track seperation issues, spagetti trackage, insufficient space for buildings town etc.

So that is where I have been.

Our prayers and best wishes for your wifes complete and speedy recovery. As for the layout it can probably be disassembed and saved but there might be an alternative.

I don't know the layout of your home but you can buy/rent chair elevators that can help a disabled person up the stairs to the second floor very easily. Its like a motorized/elevator type of chair. They may be called stair lifts. Might be a possible solution.

Sam, my wife suffered a stroke back in January and we have her bed in the living room so she can watch her Filipino TV channels and we have floor space to get her from the bed to her wheelchair. It is... shall we say... challenging.  Hang in there, and my best wishes to your wife for a speedy and full recovery.

Sam,

I wish you and your wife all the best.

My wife was in rehab for the whole month of August this year, trying to learn how to walk again.  It'll be hard on both you and your wife, but it's something that has to be done.  Make sure the rehab facility does what they're suppose to and to treat her (and you) with respect.

With the right care, she should be back home in no time.

First of all, prayers and best wishes to you and your loved one on a speedy recovery.

Second, seriously consider the benefit of model building etc. therapy.  I have a son that has had multiple surgery rehabs and many an hour of physical discomfort was made bearable by making trees, painting  models, etc.  Puzzles are great too.

Best of wishes

Sorry to hear about your wife. When my Ma was 87 she had a hip replacement. After 21 days in the rehab hospital she was climbing stairs and still is today. As a matter of fact the Doctor and physical therapist were insistant that she be able to climb stairs before she came home. But Ma did go to a Rehabilitation Hospital after her surgery, which makes a big difference in recovery compared to a nursing home or hospice care.

I hope your wife is on a strong road to recovery. Building a new layout may be good occupational therapy during her recovery

Don't know you Sam but all the best from Scotland anyway. I'm sure your good lady will be absolutely fine in time.In fact once those new parts she's had done settle  in it'll probably be you thats trying to keep up with her soon !,shame about the railway but know what, the new one will be better. take care DAVY
